Helen's hybrid seedling has its first pup!

My Helen's hybrid seedling is about 7.5 months from germination, and when I went out to water this morning I noticed a pup!

Hopefully I'll be able to protect the pup over the winter at least, even if the main p-stem dies back.

Excellent, its obviously happy. I am not sure the HH produced from the seed that seems to be floating around are as hardy as hoped. I would recommend you go overboard on your winter protection until you have a good gauge of hardiness in your area.

It is a beautiful plant and well worth the effort in my opinion

I have another seedling from my mislabeled bunch that I'm pretty sure is HH that will be in the greenhouse this winter, and if the outside one doesn't make it I'll put in more effort protecting its successor next time around. I'm planning to mound some leaf & grass mulch around them in a low chicken wire frame, but nothing more.

The (alleged) M. thomsonii also has its first pup, but haven't taken a photo yet.

Definitely keep us posted on how it goes this winter.

I did a pretty thorough job of protecting my inground plants over the last winter, but only one made it...just barely. One of the corms did survive and sent out a small pup....but not until July. If you haven't already you can check it out in a thread a few threads down in the this 'cold hardy' section called 'Helen's Hybrid Update.'

I am going to try again this year with a different seedling and a more substantial method of protection, so we'll see. Good luck.
