Ensete glaucum cold hardy to zone 7?
I'm seeing some info on the web that ensete glaucum is cold hardy to zone 7, but from what I understand it does not make pups, do the pstems have to be protected, and wrapped, not just mulched? Also what is the life expectancy for this plant, how many years till blooms?

I seriously doubt it's hardy at all, let alone to zone 7.

I've got one in my greenhouse, which I keep frost free, so I'll let you know if it makes it.

Re: Ensete glaucum cold hardy to zone 7?
I bought two very small ones this spring, they were so small I just kept them in pots this year to allow them to grow to a decent size before going out into the garden next spring.
There is no way I would treat them a a zone 7, they get the same treatment as my SDC's and regular Cavendish, which is indoors and with some augmented light. Seeing as this plant originated in India and New Guinea- to about 1500m, I think zone 9 is probably the cut off. Regards Harold |
Re: Ensete glaucum cold hardy to zone 7?
There is no banana leaf, which can withstand frost for any duration, certainly your HZ7 has
enough of that. Therefore any claims of hardiness in less that HZ10 (for the basjoo HZ5 is claimed) pertains strictly to the corm and then applies only, providing it was planted deep enough. Here in HZ6 one of my basjoos, left protected by only 8" of leaf mulch froze or rotted to 2 inches below ground and took a long time to recover in spring. Now the ensetes have no corm, thus no pups. I doubt, that they will survive, unless kept completely frost free. I am experimentally wintering an Ensete Maurlii outside this winter. While I am confident, that I can keep it frost fre in my little shelter, I am not so sure about its survival, when kept 5 months in the dark. More about that here: http://www.bananas.org/f10/packing-u...ing-19192.html Keep it warm inside and good luck, Olaf PS: there are several discussions about wintering bananas going on. If you are looking for URLs to find them, ask me here. |
