Dwarf Namwah is fantastic and most cold hardy desert banana
During the winter storm in Dallas my little greenhouse of plastic with a electric fan in it dropped to 17F most of the night for two nights due to power outage and record cold in Dallas. To my surprise my Dwarf Namwah against all odds came back and now looks like this!
I am focusing on Dwarf Namwah for its cold hardiness and awesome fruit and then my Sweetheart due to its great looking leaves. Also cold hardy but not close to the Dwarf Namwah. Cant recommend this banana enough. I have tried tons of other edible bananas but keep coming back to these two. I just wanted to share this. Banana Gallery - Winter Dnm |

Dwarf Namwa is a winner. But it’s fruit is all sweet without the acid balance that I like. But I still consider it a must have.

I have had the tall namwa in my patch from the beginning and added a dwarf namwa in 2020. Hope to get my first dwarf namwa bunch this year. It is a reliable producer. Year in and year out I get bunches on my namwa. It is sweet and should be named the "Sugar Banana" for marketing purposes. Sales would explode!

It looks great! And Namwa are very cold hardy like you mentioned!
But the thin trunk and tall stature reminds me of Tall Namwa, not Dwarf Namwa. Here’s my Dwarf Namwa. Very thick trunks (Tall Namwa also get thick trunks when they mature!) and very short stature. Whenever I get caught in a rainstorm, I go under the Dwarf Namwa and stay almost completely dry. I am about to harvest my first bunch and am very happy with the short height. Good point. I just looked at the picture and you are correct. That doesn't look like Dwarf Namwa. It is too skinny. Backyard Banana Joe's picture looks correct to me. Thick stout trunk. But maybe the plant needs some fertilizer. The bunch looks small.

BBJ,
What is the total pstem height on your dwarf namwah? Great looking bunch! Do they taste the same as tall namwah? |

That's a first generation bunch. It's got 6 hands which is average for a first. The large pup there should make a nice one though! :woohoonaner: |

Thanks! From what I have heard it tastes exactly the same. |

I’m growing namwah in a greenhouse in the uk and have been shocked by how tough and healthy it is. Brilliant plant. Just hope I can fruit it now…
