Do you think it's safe to transplant my basjoo outside now? (Zone 6)
 

So I don't think that there will be any more frosts but the temperature seems to get down to about 2c at night.

Would it be too risky to bring out my Basjoo now? Or should I wait a couple more weeks?

Boy.... it's so tempting once you get a few warm days... but the cold nights count too. I'd wait a few weeks.. even though the temptation is great this time of year.

Im zone 5b and my basjoo's are around 6 inches(overwintered in the ground) I have been throwing a garbage pail over them at night and let them soak up the sun by day.The wind chill is what Im trying to avoid!!!

It is wise to wait until the lowest temperature gets around 10deg.C.

Alright so I went ahead and took a risk with one of my Basjoos, put it out yesterday in its pot but buried it (April 30th).

To protect from colder temps and wind at night, I just put a layer of burlap and cloth on top of it. When I removed the cloth this morning, it looked good :)

You should be fine as long as your extended forcast is above 40 at night. I uncovered mine early this year on March 15th. so my basjoos are about 2 or 3 weeks ahead of normal.

Be careful transitioning to full sun when moving from inside. It helps to put the plant in the shade for a week or two before you put in full sun. You can put in full sun right away but you will actually slow the growth for a couple weeks by doing that and probably lose some leaves. Good luck..

Just wondering - can you explain the reason for waiting until the temperature is above freezing? Musa basjoo is hardy to well below freezing, but is it just the shock of changing from a warm temperature to a cold one the problem? Will the cold temps set it back a bit? I had my Dwarf Orinoco inside all winter, and we have been having very warm weather lately, so I put it outside. The low temps have been about 5C or so, and it is growing well. The next few days might dip below freezing, so should I bring it in?

Like Kevin I'm wondering why if its not freezing or a frost, these type banana's aren't in the ground permanently for the season?

I think it adds to the shock of it getting so cold all of a sudden. Especially when it hasn't been overwintered outside, is not used to the temperature, humidity, and just the outside climate in general.

Hey im in the same area i put my basjoo in the ground 2 weeks ago whenever we had a frost i just put a big tarp over it. now we are having daily highs of 55-65 f and the nights get down to 48-50. so it is safe now to put all the southern Ont nanna plants outside.
