Darjeeling Giant...Winter Hardy in Ground?
 

Has anyone overwintered Darjeeling Giant planted in the ground in zone 6b .. my basjoos all made it with the bags of leaves for protection. Also not sure about sikkimensisXparadisiaca ... thanks in advance for any help

Forgot to mention the size 2 Darjeeling Giants plants are 7 to 8 feet tall another is 3 feet....... the sikkimensisXparadisiaca is 4 feet tall

just left one in the ground to look if they will survive. I am in zone 8b but our winters are still too cold and too wet to let them survive in the ground.
maybe with some rain protection.

I thought since they came from 6000-8000 feet in the mountains they were cold hardy. Is this not so?

I"m in southern ohio (zone 6). I have 3 musa sikkimensis that I left in the ground last winter and they came back. They're at least 12 feet tall. I cut them even to the ground and used the bag of leaves method.

Are you refering to the regular sikkimensis, or the darjeeling hybrid?

I don't have an anwser to the original question, but being as it is most likely a hybrid, it probably took some of the other parents genes and is a bit less hardy than zone 6(although you never know). Just for experiments sake I hope you test your largest, and hold off on the smaller ones. Both types definatly have some fast regrow potential if they do grow back from the corm though. Good luck!

It is the hybrid, Darjeeling Giant. Our winters lately have not been bad. Maybe down to 5-10 degrees is all. I will give them lots of protection.
