Re: Can i grow Musa acuminata at zone 9 without freezing?
I live in zone 9B and we had 2 nights this winter get down to 26-27 degrees... Looks like possible frost tonight... Mid March frost in Florida, again this year.

Hopefully our west coast expert Richard will post and help! Normally in zones 9a you can grow short cycle varieties and hope they produce before fall. You can also focus on the cold hardy varieties that do best in your area. Like dwarf Orinoco, namwa, the real blue java ice cream, Mysore, etc.
I am in 8b. Here in TX some winters it will hardly frost. And others like this past winter it will get 14f! It was in the teens all the way to the gulf! That’s 9a and 9b here! You can grow them fairly easy in 9a. I’m in 8b and have good luck with short cycles and cold hardy ones. Good luck! There are lots of members around your area who can help a lot better than me! Just search around and you will find a lot of their pots with lots of helpful info! |

If it hasn't frozen (sustained temps at or below 32F) at your location in 5+ years then you are in upper zone 10a or wholly in zone 10b. |
Re: Can i grow Musa acuminata at zone 9 without freezing?
By the way, Musa acuminata produces a seeded, inedible fruit. In your location you could grow the edible unseeded banana "Namwa". I have some pups available if you don't mind driving to Vista (Oceanside) to pick them up.

You can cover them with something when cold weather strikes. After that cut off the dead tops until you think you see green. I have a couple growing from saved psuedostems 4ft tall and up that I will probably get fruit from this year.
