anxiety about the mother stem of Raja Puri

Hi everybody,

The first pic shows how the mother stem and the sucker were protected for
overwintering in the last winter time.
Despite the both were equally protected, as the second pic shows, the
sucker now sprouted a new leaf, while the mother does not move at all.

It is quite strange, if the both were set under the same conditions, normally
the mother should be stronger than the sucker.
Something must have happened with the mother stem.

Does anyone have the same or similar experience?

Stan

If the mother stem is still firm just give it some time, theres really not much you can do. If it ends up rotting then you can cut it down and the pup will quickly take its place.

Hi Gabe15,

I do understand what you mean.
But what I mean is that the mother stem is expected to flower this season,
when everything goes in order and that's quite pitty if the worst case happens.

However what I can do now is just to wait for the final answer the mother
stem gives me.

Does anyone have different views on this subject?

If you cut off about 1 or 2 cm off the mother-stem, is the centre part black? You should then cut down until you see a white central part. Rot tends to spread in fluctuating warm-cold temperatures. You should really get rid of all rotten material. (Musa Basjoo is an exception, since it seems to cope with rot and fluctuating temperatures in spring more easily.)

Erlend and other friends,

Funny was always funny!!

Following Erlend's suggestion, I cut back the stem little by little , but
unfortunately the center waws always black and rotten and the center white
portion did not come to appeare, while the stem was solid and vivid.
It is quite strange and funny!

I do not understand why the center was rotten despite the stem was solid
and vivid. Normally the mother stem is stronger than its sucker.

Anyway I lost a dream to harvest the fruit of Raja Puri during this season,
so I will try my best to grow the sucker well so that I may be able to keep
on the dream of tasting Raja Puri.
