Only 1 Iholena a couple years ago and I don't remember the details. I have a friend in the situation now as they looked filled out and ready earlier because they are already more yellow than most types. She picked of one and ate it out of hand once very yellow, and loved it.

The "fruit may require another 2 to 3 weeks" did not apply for the Tigua, but was wondering about others in the subgroup.

I guess " The bunch is small to medium-sized." did not apply for the Tigua either.

The Hawaiian Iholenas I've seen here look much more yellow from even early stages than do the green ones on this bunch. But they do eventually change into the all yellow ones like most of those in that top hand. Before that they look like some of those in those first hands that are yellowish with some green on the tips.

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

Just thought I'd let you know the box arrived in decent condition to PA. A few fruits were ripe - and I have to admit I even ate parts of the two bananas used as packing material!

The ones I've tried had a great taste and texture - much different than typical store bananas!

Thanks

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

I got to try some banana types that I would never have had the opportunity. If you ever do that again, let me know. I even tasted the packing. What were the longer ones with the orangeish flesh? They were fantastic. I assume the small ones were the vc, very good, the packing was the sweetheart, and the fourth type is majorly different than anything in the stores and better tho a little tart.

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

Would still love to taste the FHIA-03 sweetheart in its prime to see if it's too sweet!

geissene 05-15-2015 12:57 PM

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

The SH-3640 was my favorite tasting one, althought I'd probably have to try FHIA-03 again in a less goopy state.

BTW, both of my little ones are just about ripe.

scottu 05-15-2015 05:14 PM

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

The FHIA-21 were definitely our favorite and that is all time fav. Could spending 6 days aside of over ripe bananas have sweetened them up? The SH-360 were as good as store bought, not as sweet and a little tangy and tasty. The 2 little ones did turn yellow and had a good flavor but a little under developed, I think we would like them.

No, we pay a service to deliver the boxes to the PO and they will not wait in line for packages going outside the US.

Congratulations for all you members receiving packages!....

Nice assortment of banana varieties plus a "Corazon" Red Custard Apple (Annona Reticulata) fruit!

To find out when the Red Custard Apple it is ripe, "use the avocado concept", means touch and squeeze the fruit gently looking for completely softness of the whole fruit, not in one part only....Sometimes the fruit starts to soften on top only...that it is a good indication that eventually it will ripe completely....Do not open the fruit until it is ripe (soft) completely, the whole fruit!....enjoy!......

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

Thanks Keith!

Mine arrived perfectly as well! Can't wait to try the corazon, I'll give it the avocado ripeness test!

That's awesome. Always wanted to try a custard Apple or sugar Apple but I've never had a Banana either (not counting grocery store Chiquita banana). Looks awesome. Congrats everyone. I'd def be interested if this happens again.

I appreciate the honesty and don't like all the PC crap you see on forums. With that being said I don't like them either but many people love them and you'll never know if you don't try them. You were the only one that didn't like the Patupi but eating them before you can get the peel off usually means they were not ripe. Good Luck with the VC.

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

I was happy I got to try the Corazon. Just for the experience. It had lots of seeds to work around and the sweet custard taste was just on the parts closer to the outside.

I personally don't think it sucked, but I've had better fruits. It certainly won't replace monstera deliciosa as my favorite odd looking fruit!

Oh, yes... Mainly the bananas, especially GM. It's hard to know what kinds of bananas you wanna plant if you don't taste some first...

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

From my box of fruit, I've now been able to eat the Verdin and Goldfinger bananas. The rest are ripening up this week.

So, I am not a good person to provide a very detailed taste report - I'd probably need 80+lbs of bananas and live in Hawaii to do that! haha

However, I did enjoy the verdin over the goldfinger. The verdin was sweet and custard like - it reminded me of a red banana and even had a similar orange/red color inside.

The goldfinger bananas were a bit harder to judge ripeness since the peels develop big black spots as soon as they turn yellow. The fruit wasn't harmed by the spots and I probably ate them a day or two before fully ripe. The goldfingers were more tart and had a similar crisp sensation that is similar to eating an apple.

Having said that, I personally think both types were more tasty and interesting than the grocery store Cavendish.

Re: Mixed box of bananas (fruit)

No problem with shipping the 80+lbs of bananas

The Verdin is in the Red subgroup and has a lighter orange/red color inside.

The VC was excellent! I eat at the perfect ripeness. Definitely did not suck. :lurk:

The Patupi taste was also excellent. I tried too soon witch made it hard to peel. Second try a day later was perfect!

With all the rain we had today there just wasn't enough time to do boxes of fruit. And the dogs probably didn't really appreciated the quality of the Mysore, they inhaled that bunch in under 30 seconds.

The great thing about using dog crap to fertilize bananas is it's high in potassium, plus they don't eat the peels so we get an extra 30 pounds of bananas peels each day for top mulch. :woohoonaner:

I haven't had the time to ship out any boxes of just fruit lately and I don't ask for payment until after the boxes are packed and labels ready to be printed. The fruit being shipped out now have been used as packing material to keep the Manini corms from getting damaged.

Instead of having anyone wait for a long time, it's probably best to stop shipping fruit.

I'm happy that some members were able to taste a few bananas that they might not otherwise had the opportunity to.
