What part of the banana to take pictures for good ID?

Hey from South Georgia,

Can anyone give me a list of the different areas of the banana plant to photograph for a good ID?
It might also be helpful to include a banana anatomy chart as some of the terms used in describing the banana's anatomy are new to me.
I took biology and plant science in college but it was 1980 so its been a while.
Thank you in advance. :03:

One thing to look at is the petioles. That will help you narrow down what genetic group its in. Group without B genes tend to have open petioles, sometimes with wings, and the more B genes it has the more closed they are. Also look at the flower bud. Look at the shape of the bananas, the color of the female and male flowers, the shape of the bud, and whether the male flowers are persistent or not. One thing to also look for is wine splotches, which can appear depending on the genome group (the more wine splotches, the more A genes). Also look at the height of the plant. Coloration is also a big thing. The thing about many varieties is that they tend to have identifying traits as well. For example, Blue Java/Ice Cream will have a blue tint on the fruit. Also, varieties in the Mysore subgroup will have a reddish coloration on the underside of newly emerged leaves and new growth will be reddish. Generally, you get better at identifying banana varieties the more experience you have.

Overall picture of the plant, base of pseudostem, leaf showing midrib, underside of leaf if it's a different color, pups, petiole, ideally pics of inflorescence and fruit, but you're probably not to that point.

Some types don't have the best distinguishing marks when they're younger and may have to be older to be correctly identified.
