not tall (short & Fat)

I found this little guy at Home Depot it was a mistaged banana plant. Any how it does not seem to grow tall. But its getting fat and short ! I like him allot tho I think its pertty cool. Any thought of what it may be ?

Looks like a SDC maybe.

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

Looks like Truly Tiny or Little Prince to me. SDC is typically a little less stocky at that height (at least mine always has been). SDC also has red splotches at that age.

You could probably cut that dead crap off the stem. It would expose the color of it to help in identification. (not to mention looking nicer IMO)

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

Here is a Super Dwarf Cavendish with fruit - this is not my plant - I pulled this picture off the internet a long time ago. They look very similar, but I think I would say a Truly Tiny or Little Prince also, but I'm no expert.

Any which way it is a great looking plant Greg!

Hey Greg, Whatever it is, it really looks good now!

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

WOOT WOOT...very nice. I dunno, I am always pretty anal about keeping the stems exposed and keeping my plants free of any dead material so they can utilize the stem for photosynthesis as well. Don't worry, it looks kinda pale now, but it'll green up in a few days after it gets some more sun.

It says super dwarf. I think it gets 6ft or less. I can't remember for sure. I do know it

That looks really good Greg:^) No matter what kind of shorty banana it is your going to have a flower before summer is over :^)

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

It looks like a SDC to me. Looks like mine but mine is way smaller and it already has 3 pups. SDC, little prince and truly tiny all look the same some just get bigger than others. So you'll never really know till it's full grown...

just my 2 cents

As early it is in this growing season you only have a foot to go before she's ready to blow :^) Mine had grown 8" in the last month... lol The momma had a set back but she's working on 2ft again; when I put her in the ground she's really going to kick some butt.. :^)

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

I heard LP/TT are pretty difficult to get to flower (sometimes taking 3-4 years or more). I really don't think it's SDC. Notice how the leaves are so jam-packed together....SDC will do this when it's mature at 3-4 feet, but not at such a small age. Check my gallery for pics of my SDC's growth last summer....doesn't look like your plant at all when it was that size.

Where's Gabe? LOL!

Well I had her in the semi-shade in my front flower bed till the 3rd week on Nov. It was very wet. I thought she was goingto kick the bucket until I found my thermostat problem in Jan. From then on its been kickin' but and I had to clip a pup off. When I did such I found out how healthy the root system is versus when I dug her up (really sad shape). I will get to the pic's soon as I get everything in the ground :^) With 2 club feet might be a bit.. lol

My SDC that i bought off of Sandy looks just like his with the jam-packed leaves but mine is still way smaller than his. I would post a pic of it but it freaked out and lost most of its leaves not to long ago. Its doin good now though it just popped 3 pups out in a week and they already have 3 leaves. They are awesome plants i cant wait till mine recovers.

Also look at the pics on the wiki of Musa Little Prince - Bananas Wiki there is a pretty good comparison of a SDC and little pince on there. From those pics if it is a Little Prince it is an old one, and coming from Home Depot it doesnt seem likely that they would keep them around that long...

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

Looking at the compactness of the leaves, I would say that this is a Truly Tiny. Unless you have been growing it indoors. A SDC that has less than ideal growing conditions will grow it's leaves really tight like that. That is what my SDC did over the winter. Either way, it's a good looking plant.

LilRaverBoi 04-12-2010 09:39 AM

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

I dunno, the main distinguishing factors I see here are: LP has jam-packed leaves and a flat top with leaves held just above 90 degrees from the pstem, SDC has red spots on leaves, a reddish pstem and leaves with a much more upright angle.

None of my sdc's have red spots but the tt does.

SDC

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

Going by the pics that have been posted in this thread, I would guess the plant in question is a SDC. The one that convinced me the most was the pic with of the fruiting SDC in a pot. Those leaves were soooooo close together!.. much like the plant in question.

..and by the way, in order to get the best quality fruit from your plant, you should remove the little guys that form around the base.(Assuming you plan on keeping it in that pot).

Since they all look the same and you dont know how old your plant is you're just going to have to see how big it gets. I saw a plant just like your today at kmart for $12 i think im going to go get it later today.....I guess we'll both be trying to figure out what we have...lol

Re: not tall (short & Fat)

I had to go back and get it....I guess its a SDC???

Its leaves arent as compact as my other SDC but this one is way bigger and was only like $10 at K-Mart. It was it was labeled "Tropical Foliage"
