Any idea what this beautiful Musa is?
 

Lots of pink on the pseudostem and petioles. The underside of the leaves are maroon. This banana is in San Diego's Balboa Park.

I never realized Bordelon had that much color throughout the whole plant. I thought it was just the leaf underside. Very pretty. The pseudostem had a very pink cast from the ground all the way through the petioles. Have you seen this clump in the Palm Valley section of Balboa Park? I'm curious about the other Musa there as well. One looks like Black Thai and one seems to be a sikkimensis 'Red Tiger' or a hybrid. Are you familiar with them?

There's at least one more. M. lasiocarpa is planted quite a bit down there (now) and 'Bordelon' and I guess that's the balbisiana next to the 'Bordelon', but there is another one near the steps that lead down from the boardwalk. I think it is a sikkimensis or sikkimensis hybrid. The pseudostems are maroon on young plants and the leaves on young plants are also splashed with a little maroon as well. I have one grown from seed that I collected off of that one and in full sun the underside of the leaves are maroon as well even on large plants. The clump seems to be suffering right now, but a few years back the pseudostems were huge (30'?) and the leaves including petiole were something like 12' long.

Took these pix this morning.Bananas at the steps.Not looking to good infact the whole Palm Canyon looks bad.Very dry not sure if it's irrigated but it needs watering.

Here's my clump. The photo is just a few days old.

I've taken a few pups off of it but the only person who has tried it in the ground had trouble getting it to establish. Hopefully my other friend has planted his pups this year.
When I got my seeds the fruit were not only ripe but were not over ripe either. I actually cleaned the pulp off of the seeds by running them around in my mouth. The fruit had a bit of an apple/pear sort of flavor. I got a few seeds to germinate but accidently killed all but two. One I gave away (and I have no idea what happened to it) and the other is the one I've still got and have taken a few pups off of.

These plants are growig on there own,basically growing wild.Some do get irrigated from runoff others nothing till the rains come

Frank Glavin (bigdog) thought it looked like sikkimensis but since the seeds were "warty" he felt it was most likely a hybrid. It is cold hardy for me in zone 7 with mulch and although the main pseudostems always rot, the pups always make it. This should be a good year because we had an early warm up and quite a bit of rain. This is a small pup from a few years ago showing the leaf color that they have when small.
