Aloha All:
I need information on propagation of banana. Specifically, does anyone out there know of a RELIABLE technique for propagating banana plants that does NOT destroy the mother plant? Can a section of the corm be removed and placed into tissue culture after sterilization? If I attempt this, will the mother plant survive? Any suggestions are appreciated. Mahalo! Wayne |
Re: wayneb
Welcome aboard, Wayne :) ! That's quite a few questions, all of which have answers in very detailed threads here. I've grown Blue Java bananas (etc) for 3 years now (with over-wintering) fabulously. Removing & re-planting pups is fairly easy. Simply remove a small piece of the corm with some roots to keep the pup alive. This does Not hurt the mother plant as long as you cover the cut with dirt. BTW, I learned this from a Hawaiian Agricultural DVD (University of Hawaii) that you can find here in the forum.
Good things to check out are the difference between Sword & Water pups and the pup separation threads which go into detail with photos. As for Tissue Culturing, I know next to nothing BUT we have an entire section (& experts) devoted just to that! If ya have any questions about using the forum, just ask. Enjoy! |
Re: wayneb
First off, welcome to the site! I hope you enjoy it here and learn a lot. As far as propagation techniques without destroying the mother plant, separating pups and planting seeds are probably the best ways I know of. Seeds wound necessitate that the species does in fact produce them and that the plant fruits. In this case, the mother plant is going to die afterwards anyway (plants only fruit once, then die to the roots or are replaced by pups). Hope that helps!

Hi, interesting, there are several techniques, what languages apart from English do you speak? I have some materials, but certainly not in English.
