Aloha and Ia Ora Na from da Ham Fam. Born and raised in Laie, Hi, I grew up loving everything local, especially native hawaiian plants. I read Malaekahana's intro and I must have just missed him cuz I worked at the same farm he did, but they were in the process of eliminating bananas and focusing on papayas.
I started farming/gardening (so far I get 4 williams, 2 apple dwarfs, and 2 chinese 'Mahoi') on a small plot (community type) and started getting very interested in bananas, especially the Native Hawaiian varieties (and Fe'i cuz my wife is from Tahiti and is always bugging me to find some to plant!). I searched for info and bananas all over the place but didn't find much except that they're fast becoming rare. So my goal is to collect as many kinds as I can and get as many people to grow them (the more there are, the better chance they'll survive the spreading Bunchy Top Virus danger here-already had to kill 3 beautiful trees, *sniff). Will I start a nursery focusing on Hawaiian bananas? Haha, Maybe! Who knows what I'll end up doing?! I wish Univ. of Hawaii would TC them, but they only TC selected commercial varieties. Too Bad! So much potential to be the leader in saving our types before they mostly go extinct! As soon as I get better (injured for awhile) I plan to go hike the mountains around my side of the Island and see if nothing pops up. OK, it's almost 1 AM and my brain is going numb and I think I'm just babbling cuz I can't sleep. Maybe in the future, I can get some keiki's from some of you growing the hawaiian types, and TC-ing them and planting them around to spread them (yes, after making sure they are BBTV free and using a sterile medium). Ok, really, I need to go, I'm answering myself. Maybe this isn't the best time to introduce myself! Haha! Oh, well! Enjoy life and keep conserving all those varieties!!! Ahuihou! |

One hopes that you get some sleep and I hope you get better soon. Wouldn't mind living in Hawaii, but I'd have to leave 1/2 my collection of plants behind

Just might do that, if he's willing to tell! I can understand if he might want to protect it's location. But I'll just tell him to "Remember the children" of my poor Tahitian wife who wants to feed her children her traditional food! haha!!
