A short introduction...

Hello! I’ve been looking around here on bananas.org for a while. I guess I just decided to go ahead and join this time! My name is Mary and I’m 35 years old. I’m located in Northeastern Ohio. I’ve been growing banana trees & other Tropicals since at least 2012 or so. I really love gardening now that I’ve a bit of a green thumb! My nickname is in honor of all my plants from over the years that have died. It’s like a moment of silence for them. Ha ha! I’m on a quest to be able to grow real bananas off my trees this time! I’ve never got one in all these years! Wish me luck! If you would like to know all the different kinds of varieties of banana trees I’m currently growing check out my profile! Too many to keep on typing them all out again! Genuinely, it’s a big and long list! Thanks and have a great night/day! :2738:

OOOOHH! I'm jealous! I really want to grow Naval but Texas has extremely strict laws over importing Citrus trees so they can't be bought online.
It's the last tree I want to complete my citrus collection :(

Hi! I know I was so happy to get it this year! Hoping for some oranges! Sorry to hear about the strict laws! That stinks! Don’t give up hope though! Maybe one day you could get one! ;)

Hail Mary-

Welcome aboard the Banana Express! :nanerwaveytrain:

I really think you need to consider making raised beds in your garage and adding grow lights. Bringing that many plants in and out every season is going to get ever harder each time. If you have an open (two story) foyer, you might consider putting the palm in there, along with a few of the bigger banana varieties. You have a LOT of work ahead of you, LOL.

Sorry it took me so long to welcome you. I'm just now getting around to catching up on all the welcomes I missed while I was gone. BTW, I'm glad you decided to stick around. :bananas_b

Cute! I love it! Hail Mary! Wait a minute....I totally just got that! :ha: Thanks for the cute welcome message! :nanadrink:

Yeah I know what you mean! I’m definitely going to have to use my garage for sure! I wish I had a green house as well! I’ve got a few options for this coming spring/summer! Plus who knows if all my plants will survive this winter! Yeah I am so not looking forward to the spring when I have to drag out all the plants again! However, the difference with doing all this work in the spring time would be easier because I get to watch the plants grow and look like a beautiful tropical paradise right here in Ohio! So at least there’s that!

You have a couple options: drive over to FL and buy one, or find someone who isn't a commercial grower to UPS you one. I'm fortunate; NC has no plant restrictions that I know of.

If you do opt for a greenhouse down the road, you might look into making it subterranean. There's a guy in like a Zone 3 or something growing oranges this way. It never gets below 52F underground, and the sun shining in warms it up and of course, provides sunlight.

My garage is brick and windowless, so it would be the perfect spot for a grow op- I mean, plant room. There's some Vietnamese behind me that dug out their entire crawlspace eight feet deep and have a huge commercial growing operation under the house. The lights were so bright that I saw it leaking around the old access panel, and I could see heads moving around at ground level through those cracks. Not my typical area of focus, but I made a report and submitted it to my "friends," and they surveyed it a couple times to visually confirm everything. We thought we had a really good bust too. Turns out they use the house as a "church," and grow "medicinal herbs" underneath. We still have no idea how they got all of that dirt out of there without my seeing it done. It had to take months to dig that thing out and reinforce the footers. Only thing we can guess is they did all that work while adding a small addition, which means it had been going on for years before I happened to see it glowing at 2A.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a subterranean greenhouse before! It really only ever gets down to 52! Wow! It does sound like an interesting idea but for the foreseeable future I don’t think that’ll be an option for me! Thanks for mentioning it though! A guy in zone 3 is growing orange trees? Wow! I thought I was pushing it here in zone 6a! You’ve just go to be impressed because he was smart enough to figure out how to grow stuff underground! Never would have thought of that myself! Yeah you’re right, your garage does sound like an ideal place! Nice!

Are you serious? Your neighbors did that! Holy crap! They dug 8 feet down? Woah! That does sound like a huge operation! It is hilarious to think of you seeing a bright light at 2am and seeing heads moving at ground level! I love it that you made you made a report and thought you had big bust coming! It’s so funny that after all that it was just that they are using their house for a church and growing “medicinal” plants as well! I bet you & your friends were just about dying laughing! God knows I am! How tricky that they must have done this while building an addition! Very convenient! Hey, at least you tried to turn in what you thought might have been illegal activities! I probably might have done the same thing! I did have a similar experience. This was a couple of years ago now but a house that’s a little further down my street was selling drugs out of this guy’s house. People thought it was odd that this 23 year old guy managed to buy the house in cash. Not only that but there was always a big moving trucks appearing after midnight or so dropping off “the goods”. They finally caught the bad guy and as far as I know he’s still in jail. Believe it or not my neighborhood is full of good & decent people. This was the one and only time we’ve ever had trouble! Just thought you’d think it was interesting! Thank for all the wonderful replies to me and yes even for the help! :woohoonaner:

Most neighborhoods are full of good people. Every now and then you get crap. We didn't think it was funny. From everything I saw and documented, we had a pot op going on. Why in the hell would you grow legit herbs underground? We were going in for weed, and we got daisies.

As for the underground GREENhouse (as opposed to GROWhouse), you just excavate like a basement, line it and put the greenhouse on top. It was an ingenious idea.

All I meant when I said I thought you guys would find it funny was because you didn’t find anything illegal after all. Just like you said you went in looking for weed and only came out with daisies! I’m sorry but that part is funny! You had every right to think those people were growing weed. I sure did when I read your reply! You also had every right to contact the authorities to do an investigation to find out just what was going on there. I was just as shocked as you when you said all they had was “medicinal” herbs! That just sounds hokey. I have never heard of a church growing their plants in their underground greenhouse either!

Yes you’re right the underground greenhouse is a good idea. I am glad that you explained it to me though. Now I understand a little bit better. I wanted to tell you that there is a reason that this is not in the books for me as of yet. I’ll have to message you to explain further.... Thanks again for your helping me out by giving me ideas about what to do with my plants in the future! Plus I would like to say I never meant any offense.

I think you really need to build some raised beds this year, LOL. BTW, what are you doing with the tobacco? To put a Scott F. angle on it: "Tobacco... if that's what you're really growing... is Dearly Depotted your REAL name?" :ha:

Yeah I really am starting to consider it! :nanadrink: Well, my tobacco plant never got more than 3’ or so. So there wasn’t much to it! :ha: Yeah it’s pretty funny that I don’t smoke but yet I am growing tobacco!:ha: Believe it or not I was not going to do anything with the leaves! I probably would have thrown the entire plants out or even given the leaves to a relative who smokes! Love the Scott comment! Very funny!:woohoonaner:

Actually, if you want to hear when I took the mic away from him, go back to one of the early Christmas specials. He was cyber-dating one of the backup vocalists for the Jingle Cats, and wanted me to play a file called Jorgs Crimmus tunZ.

Now, for everyone else on here scratching their heads over all of this, my dumbass cat supposedly produces my radio show. :ha:

Yeah, his spelling used to be atrocious. He gave me a handmade Father's Day card one time, and it looked pretty good. He told me he'd been practicing writing on a piece of scrap paper on the desk. It turned out to be my resume.

Aww, ain’t that so sweet! George made you a Happy Father’s Day card by hand! He then goes on to tell you he had been such a good boy practicing writing on a scrap piece of paper! If there's an old episode titled Father's Day. listen to it. It'll be on there somewhere.

Oh wait, they only archive back to like 100 or something. I'll have to check my computer. If I can find it, I'll cut it out of the file and email it to you.
