Hello Everyone,

My wife says that I must have lived in the tropics in a previous life. My banana trees reached my 9 foot ceiling during the winter and I was told (?) that I can winterize them now that they are now planted on my front lawn. So I'll start asking questions. Thanks in advance!!!

I do not want to dig out my 2 trees from my front lawn this autumn. One is over 6" high, the other is about 4'. (When I figure out how to post pix I will load up some of my favorite plants.) So exactly how do I cover the trees for winter here on Long island? I know to cut off the leaves and add mulch, but how much/ deep? One site says use electrical pipe wrap and another says burlap, yet another says bubble wrap. Any answers?

What zone are you in?? There are other posters here from Long Island so maybe they'l chime in.
Burlap, bubblewrap etc, are all use as insulaters. I dig mine out & pot them for winter.

Ron is me.

The reason for winterizing them is that I don't want to dig them out. One is large. I got it as a 4' high (including pot) dormant plant last November and by April the new leaves hit my 9'+ ceiling. Plus they (3 plants) take up half of my living room. I'm in zone 7 and live right on the Great South Bay so it's always a few degrees warmer here than the north shore (of Long Island) in the winter.

Ron you should do very well overwintering on the south shore. The link Buzzwinder provided shows most if not all of the methods available. It's the best thread of all time here IMHO for northern gardeners during the off season. I wish I had your extra 10 degrees here in January.

You haven't stated what variety your nana plant is. You're in the same zone as I am, and if you have a basjoo, follow http://www.bananas.org/f15/anyone-northeast-7266-3.html and you can see what I did. There were four pups from 2007, and each of them got their own pup in 2008, under the cover. When I uncovered in April 2009, I saw that they all made it. I dug, and potted, all but the largest of the 2007 pups (4½ feet) which I left. Shortly thereafter it produced several pups and, yesterday, I noticed another new one. There are now five pups from this year, and the plant is on it's seventh leaf.

Thanks. I'm new at bananas. I can only assume that I have basjoo. So far since last November my smaller tree 4' had 2 pups, but no roots when I cut them off and they didn't make it. My larger one had 2 pups in early spring, inside the house, and I gave one to my daughter and potted the other. There are 2 more pups about 2 inches coming up now. BTW, my ex taught at SI Academy and my son graduated from there and now lives with one of his friends on SI. Thanks for your help.
