Newbie and I just ordered some seeds
 

Hello All,

My name is Ray and we live on 400 acres (we rent) here in the Hill Country (New Braunfels) Texas.

I just ordered some musa balbisiana seeds figuring that I can grow some. I see banana trees all over the place, even the San Antonio Zoo has trees producing fruit. We have the room in our yard and could also use some shade for my garden.

So am I starting with a breed that will not do well here? we have been getting some high temps here in Texas these past few years.

I am a newbie and good at gardening and giving bananas a try.

Any input at all is a big help and if there are any other Texans growing some bananas, let me hear from you and what is working for you.

I am excited to get these going and figure that if I can get them going indoors and then transplant hopefully I can maybe have some fruit this year. Am I expecting to much or can I possibly produce this fall?

Bananas grown from seed produce ornamental bananas whose fruit contains hard, inedible seeds and often times distasteful fruit. There are a number of fruiting banana experts on this site from Texas, so I'm sure at least one is going to put you on the path to bliss!

Great.. just ordered some seeds. Well they will look nice and offer shade.

Anyone out there who lives in the San Antonio area got some pups that I can start with? Not sure if it is to early or not, but I am going to start getting my garden ready early this year in hopes of beating the summer heat.

I can trade a few dozen eggs from our chicken coop.

Looking to learn more about raising bananas.

We have a few banana growers here who live in extremely hot locations. It's not easy growing bananas in the desert.

Well I have some seeds in

10 - Musa Balbisiana seeds

and 30 "king kong (?) Musa Balbisiana seeds. It is still a bit cold, but I will start germinating these probably in a week or so. Need to get my germination area going. Have other seeds I need to start sprouting too.

I will keep everyone posted and try to take pictures too.

If the area you are in gets 'really' hot, is it possible to plant your 'nanners in an area where they get partial sun, or dappled sun (like under a larger tree) part of the day? I think as long as the ground doesn't get too dried out, it might work well - but I'm no expert since here in Hawaii it rarely gets in the 90's, and it generally stays humid with frequent rain.
