Love gardening. It seems that most of the plants I want to grow are zones 9-11. A lot of challenge there. I'm starting with a fig tree.
Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome aboard, Candy!

Where are you located? I may be speaking from the tropics, but I used to live in Zone 3 and regularly grew things rated for Z10 outdoors. So it may not be as big a challenge as you think to grow bananas and figs and whatnot in the cold....

Welcome. Figs are a great plant to start with. If you're in a colder climate, learn to wrap and protect a fig for the winter and bananas won't be too far off.

That's good to hear.....bananas are one of the plants I want to grow here in Webb City.Mo.. I have heard of a banana that grows about 35' during the summer, dies in winter, but the new shoots coming up can be winterized & be next yrs. crop. Is there any truth to that? Is there a variety like that?

I hate to give this answer, but.....it depends....... on whether you have a dry or wet winter. Most gardeners under water their gardens in the winter, figuring the cold and wet will take care of things.

The toughest conditions a plant goes through is when it is cold and dry. Test the ground weekly, If it seems to needs water, then water, just like any other time.
