I'm New Too!

Hey Folks,

I've posted a time or two, ought to introduce myself
I'm in central NC and used to say I wasn't going to grow anything I couldn't eat because I had so much trouble with deer and ornamentals but someone gave me a basjoo last year and I really enjoyed growing it.
Starting several more and some Mekong Giant now, the deer don't seem to care for them. I don't think I can manage anything edible here
Anyway, spring is getting ready to go, nice to meet all you folks

Dave

Very cool, yeah my NC buddy got me a basjoo to start off with too!
Most of my naners are toast (winter pfff) but, if my basjoo didn't do so good, I probably wouldn't be so quick to get some more this year. I don't expect to get anything edible either but ima try!
Couldn't find your marker on the map???

Thanks, Dave, for posting and the intro here. I got my 1st degree at UNC-A and seriously, very seriously, considered moving to Eden to raise figs--east or west of there. Didn't work out but NC has a special place in my heart.

Good to hear from somebody else in my area/climate
My basjoo did fine, I mulched em heavy, but my caligold and goldfinger haven't budged and look "iffy"
time will tell

If'en when I get my own dirt, I'd be up for a few fig sticks. Lost all my ladies (hard to believe that all I sent out free won't come back) when I lost my home to a long planned friendly divorce. Lessons learned. I don't eat them but they're a lot of fun to grow. Keep posting! We're pretty nice here.

Your in good hands on this site being from North Carolina. You might even have a chance to meet up with some of the folks here from your state.

Now I can understand not growing fruiting bananas at your location, but exclusion of fruiting plants all together would be another story. It all depends on how fruit crazed you are. There are fruiting plants which the varmints will ignore until the fruit is past ripe and dropping on the ground. From my own experience living near Alderpoint California I can tell you that deer will not jump an 11 ft fence. And if the enclosure is also the domain for a friendly yet territorial dog like a Queensland Heeler, then other varmints will steer clear too.

You might find solace in the book "The $64 Tomato".
