Hello.

I am just here to read and observe. I live between Houston & Humble Texas off of the Beltway 8 on 5 acres. I do some gardening and I raise chickens. I guess I will read a while to see if bananas are feasable to raise in my area. If I do raise bananas I want them to be close to the kind we buy at our stores. I sell vegetables and would like to offer some bananas as well. Nice to meet yall

Sure it is feasible to grow bananas in Houston. There are people here growing bananas in NY! You are about the same--maybe a little cooler--as Pensacola, and I just harvested a couple bunches.

Nice to meet you. There is a lot of information on this forum. Me not knowing much about bananas is making it a little hard to understand all of it. I think I need to latch onto someone local as a mentor or something (if yall do that). I had no idea that there were that many different bananas. I wouldnt even begin to know which type to select. I think I can probably plant 10 or more.

For bananas, I would gladly trade you my zone 7 for your zone 9.

There are several bananas that you should be able to successfully grow where you are at. There are several varieties that are like those you buy at the grocer. You may want to also experiment with some of those not sold there. I am new to bananas but everybody tells me that many taste better than the grocery store varieties.

Welcome aboard, Mjd Texan :) ! There are quite a few that would do great in Zone 9! In fact, there are 2 that are reported to have been grown in Texas historically that winter over normally & produce great tasting nanners:

Ty Ty Nursery claims to carry the Texas Star banana BUT they don't have a very good reputation so it's generally "at ur own risk".

Welcome Mjd (or is it suppose to be MGD?) lol There's alot of banana's out there.. You want something the produces quickly. So get on a list to get a Vente Cohol.. either from going-bananas.com, or unless a member will hook you up that has a pup. I'd research the different flavors out there (yeah there's banana flavors). Select the banana's that best suit your timeline, tastes, and whether or not you wanna climb a ladder to get your banana's. Good Luck :^)

I am sure this is going to sound like a crazy question but here goes. How do you sample the different banana taste when you only primaraly (sp?) get one type of banana at the store?

There's alot of Bananas that can be grown here in Houston, One of the very common ones that you'll find In LOWES is the Dwarf Cavendish, I'm growing Ice cream, Orinoco & Praying Hands they all are doing great.

You drive to Jon's place in San Diego Ca and taste test from his front yard banana jungle. :)

Or travel, or buy online, or sometimes you might find something slightly unusual at some of the Asian markets.

Howdy from Fresno,California zone 9 here too. Im growing them . This will be my first winter with bananas but im ready hope they do fine. I have some bigger ones I received free from a lady close to me im going to leave those out all winter I have some young ones im taking in but im trying to get some that will do good here and there is allot to choose from. Good luck give them a try I know you will like them after you get started.

I would suggest Raja Puri as an ideal variety for your area.

Welcome to the site! Gran Nain are the 'chiquita' type bananas you buy in the store. Honestly, though, I would recommend growing OTHER types than this. First off, you can buy as many GN bananas at the store you'll ever want. Secondly, they are kinda bland in the scheme of banana flavors. As far as 'researching' flavors, there are some great threads concerning that topic on the site. It's sometimes very difficult to obtain such bananas to try in real life, but you can always take people's testimony on the quality and flavor to decide what to grow.

MJD if your in the shreveport area gamblin' or what not.. I have a couple pups I can dispence with; 4 Raja Puri's, a Ice cream, a Pineapple, a gran nain, and a couple Dwarf cavendishes, 2 Namwah's.. food for thought.. lol
