Hello from Isleton, California
I've been growing bananas for a couple of years and just maybe, might get some fruit this year. Just a hobby for me like for most of the others, with my other pursuits being a commercial farm operation with various orchard and field crops. Other hobby growing efforts including citrus, prickly pear, exotic melons (soon, anyways), etc. I've been a lurker here for a bit and decided to join since the pups are sprouting and I'm getting ambitous.

You've found a good site for info and support.
I'm a Sacramento area enthusiast as well. What are you growing this year? Jay |
Re: Hello from Isleton, California
hi harvey, very welcome on the forum, we have alot of members from
california who succeed in growing bananas. You will find info in the threads and also much in the WIKI. The search-box will be a handy tool. Ron |

You asked what I was growing but I don't know if you meant in the banana world or otherwise. The other list is long so I'll got with the short banana list. I'm growing dwarf orinoco, rajapuri, and ice cream and hope to add others this year. Quote:

Welcome Harvey, thanks for taking the moment to finally join and un-lurk yourself.
Look forward to watching your collection grow. |

Re: Hello from Isleton, California
Wish I had acreage of land like Harvey, then I can plant entire germplasms of whatever...

I was raised in the area and am following my father's and grandfather's tradition of farming. However, unlike them, I did have a career off of the farm and lived in the city where I was always wishing I had more room. Now, I've got two orchards and six alfalfa fields that keep me busy and I've got more weeds than you can shake a stick at, though you're welcome to come and swing a hoe at them! LOL I use hired help fairly rarely and the last time I had someone working for me I had him hoe weeds around my bananas, among other things. The consequence: my weeds are gone but so are my tags! :( I've got my orchard trees mapped out on a database but didin't bother with my four banana trees. Right now I don't know which one is rajapuri and which one is ice cream. When you wish for acreage I suggest you be more specific (i.e., 2 acres) or God may give you more than you can handle. ;) |
Re: Hello from Isleton, California
Harvey, if you follow the spiral of the leaves up, you would probably notice two opposite staircases so to speak that spiral up towards the new leaf.
Your Rajapuri has a much tighter spiral and shorter "steps" if we think of it this way than your Ice Cream does. The Rajapuri also has a much wider base, among other things. |

Re: Hello from Isleton, California
On this Easter Sunday I would like to thank Harvey Correia for referring me to this site, a year-ago January. Previously we had been communicating on a quasi-rarefruit growers site from the central coast region of California. The user interface was (is) poor and the majority of users there are quite immature -- relishing in personal attacks which appear to be the norm for that group.
Here on Bananas.org I have met 100's of wonderful people who are interested in sharing resources and ideas, never bowing down to slander when they disagree with someone. Further, there are new like-minded members who seem to be constantly joining in droves! I thank you all for such a wonderful experience on this site and wish you very prosperous gardening adventures in the coming year. :woohoonaner: |

Re: Hello from Isleton, California
Thanks Richard! Happy Easter to you as well and everone. Today is my son's 11th baptism anniversary, being baptized also on Easter Sunday. Also, a close uncle of mine lost his long battle with lung cancer yesterday, so today is a special day of reflection.
Richard, I'm thankful you've joined the IBS and provided so much valuable information. |
Re: Hello from Isleton, California
Harvey, May God continue to bless you. By the way, he does not give us more than we can handle, we do have to learn how to handle it appropriately, which takes time. That time and trials involved are what build the character we need to grow. I feel for your loss, and may you continue to be a blessing to you son, and us.
Best wishes to you, and Richard, and everyone on this Easter. :2239: |

Harvey,
Big welcome from "across the pond" in the UK. I'm going to try my hand at melons this year as well (in the greenhouse), never grown them before - we should compare notes/success at the harvest season. Phil Growing Bananas in the UK |
