Hello from Central Queensland, Australia

Hi everyone, I've joined this forum so that I can expand my knowledge on Bananas. I have had Bananas for many years at another property, I was told that they'd never grow as it was in an area that has frosts. But grow they did and they also produced bananas. However as the years went by they became less productive. On our new property in a very warm climate with no frosts, I planted some banana trees 6 months ago and they are doing well but I want to start out right this time and ensure they become really productive trees, perhaps find out where I went wrong. I've just cleaned up the messy bits on the trunk, they are only 8ft tall at this stage, not sure if there is a correct way of cleaning up the trunk. This time I have made the trees a part of my garden rather than just a stand of banana trees, they look lovely and tropical with the trunks cleaned up.
Look forward to being part of this forum.

Letting bananas get thick reduces fruiting. ECHO Global did independent testing and found one adult and 3 young suckers was the best number. So far that has worked great for me. I also keep thick piles of leaves and forest material piled around. We get plenty below freezing here and I get bananas just fine.

Thank for the warm welcome!

Botanical_Bryce thank you, such great advice there. I'll remember that one to keep three suckers. I am keeping all of the leaf piles around the base of the tree, pleased I'm on track.

beam2050, opps I'll remember that bananas are not trees, sort of like ships are not boats type thing :ha:

Does it make any difference in the care to what type of bananas you have? Previously I had Lady Fingers but this new lot is all Cavendish. Years ago it was illegal to grow Cavendish in Queensland unless you were a licenced grower. I was assured that it's now okay to grow Cavendish by the person who gave me the plants.
