Hello from Brevard county Florida

Hello all this is a very impressive forum with lots of info and I look forward to learning as much as I can. I have planted an unknown pup that I got from a neighbor that he says was a "Burrows" banana but I have never heard of that variety nor can I find anything about it. I am interested in a couple more varieties that will stay at or under 10' or so and I think I have settled on dwarf Namwah and a Raja Puri. I hear these are good hearty plants that produce lots of good quality fruit so that's what I think I plan to go with but I am open to suggestions. If anyone knows where I can acquire these varieties near brevard county please let me know. Thanks everyone! :bananas_b

Welcome to the forum. :D
Tons of dwarf varieties out there including dwarf Cavendish. Musa Velutina - pink bananas - is really cool too. It's only 2 and a half feet tall and puts out sweet edible bananas with peels that pop open when they're ripe. But they're small and have really big seeds.

Btw, you can post photos of your "Burrows" banana in the banana ID section and learn more about what it really is.

You have a burro banana which is also called Orinoco. Some Orinoco are great fresh others better cooked. Going Bananas in Homestead will have all you want. You can visit or mail order. Sometimes Going Bananas you can taste test.

I'm in Merritt Island. Right around the corner. To those that recommend going bananas thank you however I would prefer a place I can drive to that is local. That place is over 3 hours away from me unfortunately. I would be willing to do a mail order but I won't use a place that doesn't accept credit cards or at least PayPal. This is for several reasons including convenience and also I spend half my time at home and the other half away usually in 3-5 day blocks away from home and if I were to get a delivery when I was away they would likely be dead by the time I got back.

And thanks for all the welcomes!

The only one I can offer right now is Brazilian. It usually gets about 10-11 feet tall before flowering.

Looked on the wiki here and it says this variety gets to 16 feet. Is yours a dwarf version? Thanks!

I went with a friend and we drove there. Was real fun driving all that way from here to go into the middle of nowhere to have them tell you they don't take cards. Was even more irritated when she said " It's right there on the website ". I thought to myself OHHHHHH, I forgot to check the dark ages section of the site instead of the banana list.

The Wiki tells you how big they can get under optimum conditions like Hawaii or PR... I have had over a half dozen flowers and the highest one was 11 feet. Why the height limit? (Out of curiosity)
As for not taking cards, it seems to be a Florida thing. We moved here from Illinois, where I never saw a "no cards" policy. Driving thru the south when moving, where gas prices are cheaper for cash only which is on the sign in half inch letters next to the price in 2 foot letters, but for an extra 10 cents a gallon they take your card. In Florida, keep your eyes open because not accepting cards happens a lot all over, especially in small businesses. I understand why, but it's still a pain.

Yeah I don't get it. Technology makes it so easy even if they charged a 3% fee like Excalibur for example that would be ok. There is basically no excuse for that these days. I would imagine they lose a ton of business because of that.

I have spent half my life in Florida and almost never see the no credit card thing. Locally a farmers market accepts cards via a device attachable to a cell phone. Yes the 3% charge is normal on some smaller businesses but I'm ok with that. As for the height to be honest I simply want to keep things manageable. Also I have other fruit trees and I don't want something new to take over just augment what I already have in the yard. I am not familiar much with the Brazilian variety. Couldn't find much information on them.

I travel most of Florida regular and never come across places not taking cards. Even roadside sales take credit cards through the phone.

I sent you a PM so I can help end your search.

If I drove all the way to Going Bananas and didn't have cash, I would go to a nearby Walmart and get a little something and get up to $100 cash back, free... Or if you don't like Walmart, go to an ATM and pay to get some of your own money.
The "cash only" thing isn't rampant, but it's more prevalent here than in Illinois.

Locally in or near your location your choices for a plant are great.

You have Lowes, Walmart and Homedepot even a few nurseries have them.
Lowes usually has good selection. Expect to pay up to 25-35 dollars

And possibly check out Craigslist.
Plants are inexpensive.
