Description

"Eel banana" is an old hawaiian banana taking its name from the twisted appearance of the fruit when young, like an eel (puhi). From the Maoli family, the fruit is long and fat, the skin medium thick and yellow when ripe, the flesh yellow, edible when cooked. The leaf rim is brown, the petiole green with faint pink, margin pink. The trunk is green with brown markings. This banana is essentially a mountain plant but has been seen flourishing near the sea on eastern Maui. Is now possibly extinct, last seen in May 2004.
