Re: Leafs when flowering
Not acquainted with Basjoo specifically, but normally bananas cease producing new leaves when they flower.

Re: Did I overfertilize?
Leaves are a trailing indicator, meaning that they follow the vent, and show you what was happening in the past. What a leaf shows, depends on the season: If in winter, or cooler weather when leaf...

Re: PStem splitting at bottom
Not to worry. That is just a leaf petiole that couldn't expand as fast as the corm. A sign that the plant is growing well.

Re: Dwarf cavendish new growth rot
That has been my experience with Cavendish variants, the Reds, and others. There is something "magical" about 55F. When temps dip below that temp (or somewhere thereabout) during the winter, they...

Re: To desucker or not?
One pup? Leave it. Pups also provide additional anchoring for plants with fruit hanging on them.

Re: What banana to grow
It somewhat depends on your tastes, but for me, a Namwah. But there may be things available there that we don't have on the mainland that might be "the bomb".

Re: cut down/leave main trunk, cut out/leave pups
I never cut down the pseudostem until at least all of the leaves have dried out, and even then usually not til the pseudostem has stopped being firm and green. As long as there are leaves, there is...

Re: Started flowering in winter
The size and quantity of bananas of bananas has been determined by the time you see the flower. Maturity of the bunch will work itself out.

Re: Started flowering in winter
Nor more new leaves. The flowering cycle will continue to completion, even in winter. As long as the pseudostem is viable, they should ripen in the spring. You really can't alter the trajectory and...

Re: Why is my BD flowering now!?!?
It is flowering because it has reached that point in its development/age. It is common for plants in SoCal to flower in spring and fall. As long as you don't have frost or freeze, the plants will...

Re: Safe to plant vegetables near banana trees?
The only pest/disease issue that I have seen transmitted to bananas in Giant Mexican Whitefly, and even that has had minimal effect. I can't imagine that tomatoes and watermelons could be a problem.
