Re: Are Musa Basjoo leaves and flowers edible?
I found out a few weeks back that horses love musa basjoo plants. This year they did all the cutting back for me, a little more than usual...LOL. It'll be 12 inches of overwintered p-stem as opposed...

Re: Ensete glaucum?
This last batch of glaucum seeds was purchased from a vendor that had ventricosum instead of glaucum pictured. All the seeds germinated quickly. And were definitely glaucums.
MUSA ENSETE GLAUCUM...

Re: Is this a Musa Basjoo?
It looks like a basjoo, garden centers will often have them in the spring for 10-20$, often bigger too.

Re: Fifth Birthday for the basjoo patch.
In a mature patch there will be too many large P-Stems competing in a small area, so I thin them out by excavating around the corms and chopping them apart with a large machete.
They're cut back...

Re: What type of banana is this?
I concur it's most likely either an SDC or a DC (dwarf cavendish) as these are by far the most commonly sold in Canada, DCs given good conditions will get quite large, in SW Ontario I routinely get 5...

Fifth Birthday for the basjoo patch.
May 5th 2012 was the beginning of my banana odyssey, a friend at work convinced me to try my hand at growing one. He sold me a pup and I transformed a weedy spot behind my barn into a little tropical...

Re: The jungle 2016
Thanks for the update, it's going to look very nice come summer. I'm envious, a persistent trough and NE flow has kept the great lakes chilly so far and has significantly delayed my plant out date,...

If anyone has uncovered their bananas in the great lakes or parts of the N/E you may want to take some protective...

Re: Masa Basjoo Banana
Plant them in May after all risk of frost has past. Musa basjoo will be fine in the ground this upcoming winter 16/17 as long as it is adequately protected, nearly bulletproof.

Re: Fall is coming, Banana care?
I would bring in the Cohol and the DC, you should leave the Basjoo out and protect it.
The Basjoo will take years to get big if you dig up every year, you should seriously consider leaving it out....

Maurelii 2015 : The final month outside begins
It's mid September so there is only a month left in the growing season here in the Great Lakes.
I bought a couple of these in 2013 and one has gotten steadily bigger and the other one has declined...

Re: Ensete Glaucum - first try sowing banana
No heat was added bottom or otherwise, I did place a clear acrylic lid on the flat until they started popping en masse. I'd heard somewhere out here that ensetes seeds like varying temps so I figured...

Re: Ensete Glaucum - first try sowing banana
I just germinated a batch of Glaucums, so far a month after the 2 day seed soak, I have 20 germinated and transplanted out of 32 seeds.
I am very happy with the results, I ordered some from ENSETE...

Re: It's finally time to plant em all out
Just a quick update:
The basjoos are healthy yet battered in appearance due to several windy, rainy, low pressure systems. They don't have the normal vigor, mostly because of the lack of sustained...

Re: Morning in the garden
Sweet, very nice.
I'm jealous of your great weather this year, you've had a persistent high pressure ridge and here in the great lakes we've been cursed with persistent low pressure trough.

Re: How deep to plant Basjoo zone 5?
Can you give more detail?
What is normal depth?
How Thick the mulch?
Do you remove it in the spring?
When did you remove the tarp?
Normal depth would be so that the base of the p-stem is level...

Re: How deep to plant Basjoo zone 5?
In Z5 you shouldn't have to plant it any deeper than you would normally plant anything else.
All my basjoos are planted at a normal depth and survived the last 2winters from hell nicely with only...

Re: Expensive Basjoo
Yes you are correct, for a plant in that condition $20 max IMO.
I'd have a snarky comment or two for the manager/owner of that nursery.

Thanks Snarkie, I may give that a try next year.
The spindly things are common accent spikes green and red ones...aka cordylines, they are 2 or 3 years old (brought in for the winter in small pots),...
