Re: Are Musa Basjoo leaves and flowers edible?

I found out a few weeks back that horses love musa basjoo plants. This year they did all the cutting back for me, a little more than usual...LOL. It'll be 12 inches of overwintered p-stem as opposed...

Re: Ensete glaucum?

This last batch of glaucum seeds was purchased from a vendor that had ventricosum instead of glaucum pictured. All the seeds germinated quickly. And were definitely glaucums.

MUSA ENSETE GLAUCUM...

Re: Is this a Musa Basjoo?

It looks like a basjoo, garden centers will often have them in the spring for 10-20$, often bigger too.

Re: Should i cut this back?

It's fine, just plant it, in a month you won't notice it.

Re: Fifth Birthday for the basjoo patch.

In a mature patch there will be too many large P-Stems competing in a small area, so I thin them out by excavating around the corms and chopping them apart with a large machete.

They're cut back...

Re: What type of banana is this?

I concur it's most likely either an SDC or a DC (dwarf cavendish) as these are by far the most commonly sold in Canada, DCs given good conditions will get quite large, in SW Ontario I routinely get 5...

Fifth Birthday for the basjoo patch.

May 5th 2012 was the beginning of my banana odyssey, a friend at work convinced me to try my hand at growing one. He sold me a pup and I transformed a weedy spot behind my barn into a little tropical...

Re: The jungle 2016

Thanks for the update, it's going to look very nice come summer. I'm envious, a persistent trough and NE flow has kept the great lakes chilly so far and has significantly delayed my plant out date,...

Heads up in the NE and Great Lakes

http://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/gfs/2016040118/gfs_T2m_neus_28.png

If anyone has uncovered their bananas in the great lakes or parts of the N/E you may want to take some protective...

Re: Masa Basjoo Banana

Plant them in May after all risk of frost has past. Musa basjoo will be fine in the ground this upcoming winter 16/17 as long as it is adequately protected, nearly bulletproof.

The recent cold wave in Asia was immense in scope.

Re: What is wrong with my baby Musa Velutina

I wouldn't worry at this stage, damping off (overly moist conditions) is usually what gets my seedlings on emergence. The others emerging appear ok.
I would have kept them in full sun myself. The...

Re: Cut my nanners back too soon!

I cut my basjoos back and covered and protected them in mid November, now of course about a foot of growth has pushed the tarps up into little tents...LOL.

Here in the Great Lakes the grass is green...

Re: Ensete glaucum pupping?

Wow that's incredible.

I would love to see some pics of that if you could.

It would be the first documented pup from an Glaucum to my knowledge.

Re: Fall is coming, Banana care?

Do you guys slowly bring your plants in for winter as in a bit at a time?

I have nearly fifty plants at last count to bring in this year....so yeah I bring them in slowly over the course of a month...

Re: Maurelii 2015 : The final month outside begins

That horse looks like he wants to help you trim down the leaves for overwinter.

Oh he would, given half a chance.

Re: how do i winterize ensete ventricosum green vat

Unless you are in Zone 10 or better you will NEED to bring it in. You can either store bare root and dormant, dry and in a cool dark place or put it in a container a few inches wider and deeper than...

Re: Fall is coming, Banana care?

I would bring in the Cohol and the DC, you should leave the Basjoo out and protect it.

The Basjoo will take years to get big if you dig up every year, you should seriously consider leaving it out....

Thanks for the info.

Re: Sikkimensis Red Tiger?

Yeah, I've got two pups that I will remove from it as an insurance policy, but I still would like to get some opinions on it's variety.

Maurelii 2015 : The final month outside begins

It's mid September so there is only a month left in the growing season here in the Great Lakes.

I bought a couple of these in 2013 and one has gotten steadily bigger and the other one has declined...
