Re: The Pineapple Diaries
I'm still batting a perfect zero on pineapple tops. But three of my pineapple seeds have germinated.

Re: The Pineapple Diaries
I bought another pineapple yesterday. No visible rot, for a change. But I'm going to let it dry longer anyway.

Re: Making pothos bloom?
How tall did it have to get before the leaves changed? Does an individual leaf that's initially grown the usual shape ever continue to grow and get the mature leaf shape?

Making pothos bloom?
Unlike my bananas that may never germinate, I actually have a "philodendron" (so called by the person who gave it to me; really presumably Epipremnum aureum, aka "pothos"). In the wild, they develop...

Re: implants as a means for crossing Musa
To get a hybrid, the pollen has to trigger a response from the pistil, the pollen has to react to that response by growing its tube, and so on until the gametes actually meet and fuse. If the...

Re: Growing in Costa Rica
One of the more experienced people here can tell you the specific numbers, but I'm pretty sure 15-15-15 isn't what you want.
Also, I recall someone with poorly-drained soil getting told it can be...

Re: Growing in Costa Rica
I'm a complete newbie: everything I know about bananas is from reading on here in the past couple weeks. But here's my take on plants "becoming sterile". The above-ground "banana tree"...

Re: The Pineapple Diaries
I've tried three pineapples so far. All three have been full of rot from the start. Two I threw away when they started to stink. The other I tried to take off all the rot, and there was nothing...

Re: implants as a means for crossing Musa
My guess (and this is pure guess) is that if two species won't hybridize the usual way, in most cases they still won't won't hybridize if you make a chimera first (if they'll even make one). But I...

Re: implants as a means for crossing Musa
A chimera contains genetically different cells. If a chimeric plant self-fertilizes, and the pollen is from one genetic type and the ovule is from the other, that's just the same as if the two...

Re: implants as a means for crossing Musa
The agricultural revolution I'm looking forward to is in soil ecology. I like to imagine that some day we'll be able to know the entire genome of every strain of microbe in the soil and how they all...

Re: LED Grow Light
Inverse square is when the light comes from a single point. Inverse linear is when the light source is a line, extending forever in both directions.
When a light source of any shape is very far...

Ignore this. I plugged in some smaller values for the distance, and got negative answers. Odds are, I won't figure out what went wrong until after the holidays.

It sounds as though making chimeras by mixing cells in TC is probably possible, but doesn't usually happen:

Re: Grafting bananas Stage II
I hope no one minds me replying to old threads.
It's easier to see in the discrete case. For Richard's example, you're adding up pieces of area under a curve that goes through 1, 1/e, 1/e^2, and...

It's way too soon for the bananas to have germinated, of course, but I have one cactus sprout. So I put half a dozen CFLs above the box of ziploc bags of cups, hanging on a string between some cheap...

I just noticed the edit to #22. If I had seen it before posting #23, I wouldn't have been so short. I expect to get something posted on Monday, either a link or a more detailed explanation of the...
