Re: Dwarf Namwah oddly tall this year
It's not a dumb question. Many of varieties of bananas are somatic mutants. As I understand it, all the varieties within a subgroup (e.g., all Cavendish varieties) are somatic mutants of an...

Re: Dwarf Namwah oddly tall this year
It's not Dwarf Namwah. It's tall Namwah ("fake Ice Cream"). The height, plant shape (not broad enough at the top of the p-stem), and the clean rachis distinguish it from Dwarf Namwah.

Re: Are these ready to harvest?
Like servatusprime said, wait until an undamaged finger or two start to turn yellow. (Damaged ones often ripen prematurely.)
Or you can cut off a finger or two and see how they ripen. You don't...

Re: Time to separate the pups for the Spring
I still like mine. And if you can't weld just take the bar to a weld shop and you're in bidness. Thirty bucks or so.

Re: Looking for small bananas for greenhouse
Bananas mutate. Reversions of "dwarf" to "standard" are possible. Note that there are "standard" heights shorter than some "dwarf" heights. The latter term is only used when two different heights are...

Re: Looking for small bananas for greenhouse
Hmmm - sounds like my D Braz may not be a D Braz.
Here is a photo of my D Braz last season - top of the window in the picture is 6 ft - My D. Braz nanas push to 9 ft. Those are double Moiha on the...

Re: Dwarf Namwah oddly tall this year
This picture is what I am calling "eye candy".
Nice. Namwah (dwarf and tall) are usually very prolific, but it seems that this year quite a few people are lining up for the title "King/Queen of...

Re: Looking for small bananas for greenhouse
I grow Dwarf Brazilian as well as Dwarf Namwah.
Dwarf Brazilian is definitely shorter than the Dwarf Namwah. As a matter of fact the fruit bunch is conveniently hanging in shoulder height, while...

Re: any idea what type
Yes, the widely splayed fingers, as well as the shape and color of the male bud, and the overall appearance of the plant. Also, it is quite common in the US.

Re: ID Please!...
If you are talking about the first one you showed a picture of, which I said might be Rajapuri, Dwarf Brazilian is a good guess and a real possibility. Those two are very similar. Rajapuri tends to...

Re: ID Please!...
I actually thought it was a dwarf Brazilian banana. It took nearly 3 years to flower and rarely pups. Thanks for the pics, I hope I can get a real ice cream soon.

Re: Dwarf Namwah oddly tall this year
I would not look at the base for a possible inflorescence. The bunching of the leaves on the top of your earlier pictures are a better indicator for a soon to be expected bloom.
Looking good!
