Re: Rooting pineapple
I usually grow my Pineapples in pots. I let the base dry out and then just stick it into the soil for it to root. I've only gotten one to produce fruit and it took over 2 years. I actually had...

Re: Raw plantain!!!
The local Asian supermarket bags up over-ripened plantains and sells them for $1/bag (about 8 per bag). I wait until the skin is blackish outside and then cut them up and freeze them for shakes.

I don’t know how well it would work in your region, but her in Tucson, AZ, we have an Osborne Prolific Fig whose leaves don’t drop unless there are low temps. The best part, however, is that it...

Re: New member - Tucson, AZ
I'm in Tucson too. I've been growing bananas for about 3 years. I've kept all of mine in containers. The biggest problem I've had is that I've lost the plants and fruit to frost and wind. This last...

Re: Plantain price gauging
Here in Tucson, the local Asian Grocery store charges $1/lb. I think you are undercharging! Although, they do have a special: they fill a bag (about 5 lbs) of plantains that are very ripe and charge...

Re: Unknown plant
You should pick some fruit and try them. I doubt they are poisonous. The strawberry guava seeds are about 2mm across and very hard. The fruit should have a distinct guava smell.

Re: Everyone should have bananas in their yards!
It's funny, but not everyone grows bananas in Hawaii. When we had a house on Kauai our gardener discouraged us from planting bananas because he said, they became "ratty". We planted them anyway and...

Re: Wide or tall pots?
I know that banana roots grow more shallow than deep, but I've used deep pots for several reasons: I fill the bottom of the pots with rocks, not just for drainage but to also help in securing the pot...

Re: Banana Science!
I first noticed these 3 segments/locules when I was a little boy. I liked to take my bananas apart and eat each segment separately. Now I just jam the banana in my mouth.

I've purchased containers from GrowerSupply.com (http://www.growersupply.com/) . You need to take into account the shipping cost. The 45 Gal containers need to be shipped by truck. The smaller ones...

Re: how much perlite and where?
I've read in the forum here that about 1/3 the soil can be perlite or vermiculite. I use 1/6 perlite and 1/6 vermiculite (since vermiculite is cheaper here) when I repotted my bananas.
But since the...
