Re: Ae-Ae bananas on Hawaii Island
Russell:
The same type of leaf damage due to water stress can happen even with the less 'exotic' varieties. I had a lot of leaf edge chlorosis this past summer here in Hilo on both my Dwarf...

Re: Ae-Ae bananas on Hawaii Island
Another suggestion; There are more and more newer varieties of variegated bananas available on the market now. The variegated dwarf Namwah in my opinion is spectacular and outshines the Aeae as far...

Re: Ae-Ae bananas on Hawaii Island
Coast Crab;
This 'problem' of having the white mutant tissue browning out is inevitable. While the browning and dessication of this white tissue is sped up by growing in full sun, it will happen...

Re: Ae-Ae bananas on Hawaii Island
I have grown them for several years and have also had great results. I have one mat in front of my house that is in full sun. In one season I got three pups and they have grown nicely. I have...

Re: Ae-Ae bananas on Hawaii Island
Aeae is not difficult if you provide the right conditions for them. Having grown them for about 20+ years, here are the basics I have learned along the way. They can be PH sensitive. Provide soil...

Re: N. Fla. winter--to cut or not to cut?
I've never bothered with wrapping any bananas but I have insulated them with mulch and leaves and very small ones I put a container over. For the amount of bananas the cost is just stupid high to...

Re: African Red
It is possibly a hybrid with M. sanguinea, but really not much is known about its origins. From what I have observed it is completely sterile both female and male.

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
I can attest that Sugar Cane is rewarding to grow, and when it gets warm out, it can grow almost like corn! I would not be without it for the aforementioned reasons, including using it as the best...

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
Russell: I was in Central Florida for 2 years in '04 and '05 and grew sugarcane there in Ellenton which is just a few miles from the southeast shore of Tampa Bay. It grew very well.
Your method...

Re: iholene red?????
It looks more like 'Tall Red'. The Iholenas have a very distinct coppery/red leaf underside and not so much red in the pseudostem and petioles.

Re: iholene red?????
I think it is a dwarf red. I have a Iholene red and the pstem is green with a hint of red on the underside of the leafs. I also have a d. red and it looks very close to the one in your picture.
