Spider mites on my banana

Hi all,

My banana has been amazing the past few months, growing like crazy and making lots of huge leaves. (Here's an album of the progress: Death and re-birth of a Banana plant - Album on Imgur...

JBijl is Nederlands, hij heeft mij wel eens aangeboden om een pup toe te sturen toen ik dacht dat mijn banaan dood ging :)

Re: I give up on my banana...

The white roots are all coming from the pup. I've taken all the tiny brown roots off since they were really tightening the clump. All that was left before I repotted it (I've mixed some soil from...

Re: I give up on my banana...

I've dug up the corm and to my pleasant surprise, there's a nice pup forming!! The corm is nice and solid, no soft spots whatsoever.

Re: I give up on my banana...

The heat is off, no radiator is on within 4 meters of what's left of the plant. I'll dig it up again tomorrow.

I give up on my banana...

I've followed the advice of many people who have responded to my previous posts. I've cut all browned roots off the corm and replanted it deeper so the corm is completely covered in sandy soil. All...

My nearly dead banana ('nother update)

Hi all,

It's been a month since I updated last. I've since put the corm in a bit deeper and it does seem to be absorbing water. The radiator (almost) underneath the plant is turned off. There's...

Update on my nearly dead banana

Hi all,

2 weeks ago I asked for your help because my banana plant seemed to be near death. Now, the plant seems to be even nearer death.

I've repotted it in well-draining cactus soil, I bought a...

Re: I think this one's near death...

I watered a tiny little bit and I'm leaving it be at least until I notice the top half inch is dried out.

Re: I think this one's near death...

I'll be Dutch right back to you!

Ik heb hem nu al verpot, en ik heb nu ook de droge en zwarte delen van de plant weggehaald. Ik heb ook een poging gedaan om de sigaar een beetje open te krijgen, en...

Re: I think this one's near death...

Final update for now, I've repotted my plant in cactus mix, a very well draining type of soil composed of sand and peat. I'm hoping this is what my plant needs to get back to health. I'll post an...

Re: I think this one's near death...

I've parked it in a nice sunny spot near my parents's pond over summer, I was house sitting for them when they were away for a month. Weather was sunny, about 25-30 degrees C, sometimes dipping to 20...

Re: I think this one's near death...

When the radiator near the plant is on, most of the heat instantly gets mixed with the much colder air coming from the window.

I'll see if there is a shop open tomorrow that sells coarse sand (I'm...

Re: I think this one's near death...

I'm taking JP's advice to replace the 'universal potting soil' it was in with coarse sand. The soil has nothing in it that would retain even more water than usual in this type of soil. Thanks for all...

Re: I think this one's near death...

I haven't watered it in over 2 weeks now. The soil near the middle was dryer than the soil nearer the edge.

How about now? I had pinned my location on the map, but now I found the profile thingy...

Re: I think this one's near death...

Done.

I've just taken the plant out of the pot and teased the roots apart. The soil around the edge was very moist, but the nearer to the center I got, the drier the soil was. I could still see the...

Re: I think this one's near death...

I just repotted it from a way smaller pot two months ago. Back then I thought the condition was caused by rootbind, but since it didn't improve, it's not that.

Re: I think this one's near death...

There was a tiny bit of green forming at the base about 2 months ago, but that's gone dead now... I haven't watered it for 2 weeks and the soil is still moist. I can't get to the lice inside the...

Re: Can I cut the pseudostem?

I've discovered plant lice inside the cigar leaf. I used a solution of soap and spiritus to kill them. I know a capsaicin solution is better for the plant, but I couldn't get my hand on peppers yet...
