Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Harvey,
It's not much of a set-up! A 5-gallon bucket with a hole cut in the lid with a 5" net pot in it, the banana sitting in the pot with some lava rock, roots growing in the bucket and an air...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
An update:
Nearly two months later, the plant is doing great. The pup kept growing and it was about 16" tall with six-seven leaves - everything under the lid where it didn't get any light at all. I...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
An update:
To notrecruiting: It is a hydroponic grow, using Deep Water Culture. That's where the plant sits in something resembling a pot, but with lots of slits in the side so water can circulate...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
An update.
Not sure what to post as far as how the plant is doing under the lights and in a DWC system.
About two months ago, the new shoots quit developing. I thought it might be because the temps...

Like roots? A DWC grow
I started a Dwarf Cavendish in a DWC system (5-gallon bucket) the last week of September. Here's a picture of part of the root system less than three months...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Kevin,
No problem dropping the part regarding Richard, but IMO it would be a disservice not to continue to post how my hydro DC is doing under the LED light - that's at least part of the OP's...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
I suspect Richard cannot back up his claims - it's been more than a week and he has not responded.
IMO, he should have stuck around and put up his 2000 watt system against my 125 watt one. At least...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Richard,
I guess these are not technical enough to qualify?
Do you have any idea what PAR is, or DLI?
So what variety of banana are you growing and what is your average harvest per tree?
$100...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Richard,
I ave read what you have posted. Here are the posts:
Forget LED's for crops, although they are great for indoor tropical plants that enjoy low light in their natural habitat.
In the long...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Richard,
You continue to ignore the part DLI (the amount of photons a plant uses in photosynthesis) means. Experts, which do not include me, have determined the optimal mols per day needed per...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Richard,
All that you say in your last post may be well and true, but that's NOT what this thread was about. I don't give a flying rat's behind what some lunatic in La-La land will do to get a ripe...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Richard,
A commercial running these days urges some: if you find you are digging yourself into a hole, quit digging. I suggest you consider this advice.
You try to say that producers who spend $200...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
My DC seems to love the combo of hydro and LED. It's adding a leaf per week, with a tiny internodal length. The guy I bought the plant from said the plant would start producing fruit when it gets...

Re: MH Vs. HPS Vs. LED Vs. Fluorescent
Richard,
The reality is the same. The most bang for the buck is MH lights. Not that I sell them, I don't sell anything except maybe some tomatoes and peppers when they ripen and I have more than I...

Re: banana growing in water
Vicki,
Actually, one doesn't need to acclimate the plant to water. I bought a live plant, that had a nice rootball in potting mix. Washed the mix off, cut a large enough hole in the bottom of a 5"...

I admit, my ability to germinate banana seeds has to rank at the very bottom of an extremely long list: one seed out of about 100.
The one that did germinate I let grow and grow, but it was in a...

Re: What grow lights are you guys using?
Duh, no, regarding the temps. My upstairs room does not go from 54 to 92 in one day! The room tends to stay between 65-80, depending on the amount and intensity of sunlight. Overall, the places stay...

Re: I wonder when I should start my pepper seeds?
You really don't need the lights until the seeds germinate but once they do, you want to get them as close as possible to the plants. Also, go very lightly on the Nitrogen while they are smaller - I...

Re: Shortest day of the year
Just as important, soon and very soon the sun will be higher in the sky and my neighbors house (and a couple of weeks later, mine) will not be casting shadows on my GH at 4 pm!

Re: Hello all, new guy from Ohio.
Dan,
What part of Ohio? I'm from the Queen City, just found this site a few weeks ago.
One problem I may see with growing a large plant in hydro would be if you need to change the water - unless...

Another way to apply bubble wrap is to spray the glass and then put the wrap on it - no need for tape.
