I'll vouch for the peanut butter being irresistible to little (and not so little) rodents.
We're "lucky" enough to have "Califirnia mice" which share the trees with the squirrels.

I don't know how to recover your bananas, but I've heard that the little critters find peanut butter very enticing. Put a little under the trigger on a regular (non-glue) trap so the little bugger...
