Re: California Gold

Here's what survived our recent freeze in southwest Louisiana. We were 23 one night and 26 the next with 15 hours below freezing the first night:

Re: greenhouse bananas and heating cables?

I got mine at Home Depot and they are actually cables for pipes to and from hot water heaters. They have a thermostat set at about 45. I had to order mine online because I can only remember once in...

Re: greenhouse bananas and heating cables?

I've used heating cables occasionally when I am expecting an arctic front and the temps are going to be in the middle 20's at night and not above freezing the next day. Once every 5 or so years. I...

Goldfinger?

I planted Goldfinger and Sweetheart two years ago. I think I got the tags mixed up. The banana that is fruiting is about 8 feet tall. The other banana is well over 12 feet tall and has a massive...

Re: Dwarf Orinoco Wanted

I don't ship anymore but if you're in my area, I have a California Gold pup you can have. Most people believe them to be the same.

Re: Bananas near Sargent, TX. Orinoco?

Based on the pictures and your location, they definitely look to be Orinoco, which is very common along the Gulf Coast. The fruit looks very angular which strongly points to Orinoco.

Re: UH... What is this?

Snookie,

You're definitely growing a Curcuma ginger. It could be any of a number of summer blooming Curcumas but since you're a Louisiana resident, my guess is Curcuma Petiolata. If it is, it has...

Re: Apple, Cali Gold, or Lady Finger

Kane,

Give me a call sometime, I'll fill you in on my growing experience in Lake Charles. I'll PM my phone number to you. Lady Finger is much too cold sensitive to grow in the ground without...

Re: Musa Black Thai banana

I grew this banana for several years. Each year it came back less robust until two years ago when it finally died. I didn't protect it but it was planted on the south side of my house with some...

Re: Ae Ae

This has happened to me more times than I like to remember. Ae Ae are, for me, the most difficult and problematic banana to grow. The only treatment I have found that will work in your situation,...

Re: Southern Weather Forecast

I looked at the forecast yesterday and wasn't worried. Lows in the 50's for the coming weekend. Now, this morning, forecasting 40 for a low Saturday night. Not harmful to the bananas, but...

Re: Tacca Integrifolia

I bought mine from Gardino's. They have great plants and most are large. The shipping can be as much as the plant but you generally get a blooming size plant. The Tacca came in bloom several years...

Re: Ginger

Most likely. You can cut the whole stalk to the ground, remove all the leaves, make a trench a couple of inches deep and lay the whole stalk in the trench, cover up with dirt. Costus will root from...

I was shocked this morning with frost. I didn't anticipate that. I'm so ready for this to stop.

Re: Veinte Cohol

Mine spent the entire winter unprotected. No viable pseudostem from the harsh winter but new growth coming from the corm. I would suspect that with a little protection, like wrapping the pseudostem...

Re: Southern Weather Forecast

I hope the cold doesn't make it down to southwest Louisiana. My forecast doesn't show anything colder than 48. I've taken most of the plants out of the greenhouse and begun my fertilizer routine...
