Re: Unknown variety needs ID

Im a little stumped actually, it has a rather unusual bunch appearance, very few but very large fruits. At first I was thinking Cavendish upon seeing the fruit, but the bud is not right. It could...

Re: New Banana pup - Blue Java I think

Yes, it’s ‘Ice Cream’ aka ‘Blue Java’, fairly common in Hawaii. They pseudostems snap often, they are quite weak, even if they have small bunches, so I recommend to always prop them, but even then...

Re: Banana Bunchy Top Virus?

I don't see any symptoms of BBTV, and unless you are growing this plant in a banana-growing region with BBTV such as Hawaii, some parts of SE Asia, Southern India, Northern Australia, East Africa,...

Re: Will this little guy bear edible fruit?

Where are you located? Location can give a lot of context and narrow down possibilities. Its very hard to say with precision from a plant that young, and the photo itself doesn’t give much to go on....

Re: Finally fruits so time to get ID on this mystery Banana or Plantain...

Im leaning towards ‘FHIA-17’, but not 100% sure on that yet, will have to cross check with my photo files later.

Re: Bali Banana

There is no way to ID it at this stage, and Indonesia has a very high diversity of bananas, not even everything is documented, if you forgot the name you're very unlikely to come across on the...

Re: Help Identifying Mystery Variety Box?

Not 100% sure on all these as it's very hard to tell just from a few fruits for some cultivars, better to see the whole plant, or at least the whole fruit bunch, but my best guesses going clockwise...

Re: Real Blue Java or bust???

Your plant is far too young to ID with any accuracy as far as it being real 'Blue Java' vs. 'Namwah', which are often sold as 'Blue Java'. You'll have to wait for fruit for a 100% confirmation.

Re: Backyard discovery

The number of ridges has to do with where the finger is in the hand, how they press against each other as they grow, its not a diagnostic trait. You have to look at the whole plant.

Re: Dwarf red?

Too small of a plant to give ID. But Dwarf Red doesnt have persistent bracts, and the fruit is normally very dark red when young and only sometimes gets a little bit of green towards maturity, but...

Re: Uganda cooking banana

Matooke is the name of the food/dish made from those bananas, but the plants themselves have specific cultivar names.

Re: Uganda cooking banana

Matooke bananas have nothing to do with FHIA bananas. Matooke are traditional landraces, Mutika/Lujugira subgroup, AAA genome. FHIA bananas are all hybrids from a modern breeding program. Some of the...

Are these photos yours? They are all different varieties.

Tall bananas with narrow and strait leaves is not very specific, there are many varieties with those traits, they are not unique traits....

Re: Another for a friend. thought was namwah but was wrong.

Here is the one I was talking about that is probably same as yours. This was from Fairchild gardens years ago, but I've also grown it in Hawaii. It's a Namwah/Pisang Awak, but with some amount of...

Re: Another for a friend. thought was namwah but was wrong.

There are a few different Namwah/Pisang Awak available even in Florida, and one of them that I've seen and grown looks a bit like this one. It has semi-persistent male flowers below the bunch, and...

Re: funguscide dip for REPLANTING SUCKERS

Paring the corms and inspecting for weevils is more important than bleach, if you aren’t doing that and making sure they arent already infested, then the bleach wont do much. If you do that, and also...
