pull the plants and inspect roots/corm.. if mushy then yes it was rot. I'm sub tropical so I don't have experience with container growing but i'm aware to much water in winter is a bad thing for them.

wait till fruit is done, then cut off the mother pstem and slice that pot right in 1/2 leaving 1/2 of the mother corm with each pup and replant. i'd imagine that 1/2 of the mother corm would provide...

chop up the leaves so they break down faster and let rain soak through better. Pstems small chunks or if I want them for putting around my fruit trees I cut them 12"-20" long sections then slice them...

If you have the time to thin out and keep a mat within check do it, it will give better fruit production and airflow/sun...

i'd almost go extreme and cut off the Pstem and just plant the corm in some well...
