Re: Mekong Giant vs Basjoo
It’s like spring all over again. All my bananas are back pushing. 65 on Christmas. Here’s some photos of my Mekong’s and Saba. Saba is probably the third hardiest banana that I have. I covered up the...

Re: Free Manini A'ea'e
Well I’ve decided to dig up my tender and small variegated plants to help get them re-established in a pot. I’m leaving my Variegated Tall Namwa outside until November. Here are some end of season...

Re: Free Manini A'ea'e
I find them to grow a little easier than the Florida. They’re still tricky to overwinter in cooler zones. I overwintered a Florida last year and it had some issues with the temp swings, but survived....

Re: Free Manini A'ea'e
The mat that the seeds were throw in were lightly covered with grass clippings and straw in hopes of keeping the base of the Dwarf Brazilian pstem warm. Pretty much standard procedure for any of my...

Re: Free Manini A'ea'e
It got down to 20 degrees twice in February and the mid twenties a few times in January. That’s with a couple of very light snow flurries.

I had about 15 sprout from roughly 40 seeds? I kept about three I thought were most desirable and vigorous. It’s funny because some of the seedlings first two or three leaves would be solid green...

Crap, I thought you had a Pitu. That’s a Patupi. My patupi hasn’t been very robust. Typical AA. Starts to grow once it hits about 4’. Lol. My Veinte Cohol is pre flagging right now and decided to...

Re: Mekong Giant
I’d like to see how a Pitu grows on the SC coast. Mine almost grows as fast as Namwa here. It’s insane. My Orinoco grows much slower.

Re: Mekong Giant
I’ve learned that they grow best by the shaded side of my house. It only gets morning sun. I’ve also learned not to plant them close to pavers and/or any other plants, because you’ll think your other...

Re: minimum temp for overwintering in a pot?
So the basement with a super sunny window would be my personal pick. Is this an unfinished section in the basement that perhaps has a little more humidity? My experience with indoor storage is that...

Re: Mekong Giant
That’s what I would do. Last year I had to wait until it got about 4’ tall before I transplanted it to my backyard. It didn’t put out a real leaf until it was that tall. It had a great root system by...

I’ve pulled some Mekong Giant runners up before and they looked crazy. They’ll stick up about 1’ and the rhizome at the bottom will go 90 degrees for about 2’ and snap off without any roots...

Re: Which fertilizer is best for bananas?
I use black cow/compost as a top dressing. MOP 0-0-62 Granular and Urea 46-0-0 granular every two weeks. There is a ratio sheet on Bananapups.com. I’ve used the 10-10-10 and 15-5-30 in the past when...

Re: Which to plant
I gotcha. Well, it can be tough to keep them thinned out once they pup. They make great compost though. I let them grow 2-3 feet and split them if the mother is close to fruiting, or pop em and chop...
