Re: Why do people bury stuff on their property?

Most of the burials I'm talking about took place 25+ years ago, before the new regs were in place.

Not sure how old yours stuff is, but that was my guess.

Re: Why do people bury stuff on their property?

Speaking from my work desk...

In 1992 the EPA put forth the Subtitle D regulations. The biggest and most direct result of this is that all landfills had to meet certain requirements for design and...

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

Jeff,

Seeing your results when you have the same zone as me makes me a bit jealous. I now declare you to be my 5b banana nemesis!

(seriously, though, awesome growth!)

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

So, anybody else having a really slow year?

I had 2 lumps of Basjoo and a small patch of Zebrina come back this year and they seem happy. However, we're now into the beginning of August and...

Finally got the garden in this weekend and last night:

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

Huzzah!

I was weeding the banana patch yesterday (which is amazingly easy as there are no bananas) and noticed I have a tiny sprout!

The elephant ears are all sprouting and there is one 3" little...

Re: New house, new chapter

I gotta say, this is one of 4 or 5 threads I check every day regardless of updates. I am amazed and inspired by the transformation of this property.

It really gives me some ideas for my own home...

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

We're now at 45 days in the ground, no rot going in and no temps below 35 since they were planted. . .

Still nothing.

I'm about to give up, especially since all the elephant ears around them have...

Re: Growing Papaya as Ornamental annual.

I'll bump this thread up.

I had a papaya sprout last year from store-bought fruit seed. Currently it is has been transplanted to a larger pot, has a half dozen small leaves or so, and stands about...

Re: Bananas growing in Nebraska

As a fellow Omaha resident I must say that my jealousy knows no bounds!

I've had my basjoo in the yard for nearly a month now and they haven't budged.

But it does give me hope that someday I'll...

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

Okay, we're coming up on a month in the ground and not even a twinge of a push from the middle.

I'm beginning to give up hope...

Re: Outside Basjoo - when did your corms start growing this year?

Ugh...

Solid corm, no rot, and has been in the ground for 11 days. Has been watered and rained upon several times, soil temps in the 40's-50's, several days of full sun, and air temp has been...

Re: Magic Citrus Bloom Shot?

It would seem that most of my plants, citrus and otherwise, are happy orphans who know I won't kick them out.

Still, it would be nice if one of the little buggers would give something back. Just...

Magic Citrus Bloom Shot?

Hey guys (and gals),

I've been growing some citrus from seed for a while and, though some are only a few years old, I do have a Pomelo that is nearly 5. It is healthy, it is happy, it is not (so...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Took a moment over the weekend to "clear out" the tub of banana corms/stalks. They all look long dead and the tops were completely dry husks. I'd never overwintered any of my bananas in anything...

Re: questions for usa forum members

I agree with you on the xenophobia point. It's depressing how insular some of my countrymen can be at times. That same mentality leads all too often to racially motivated ire, and that's a sad...

Mike,

I'm in the same bucket, except I just dug everything up before the hard freeze on Sunday. I had these in pots last year, but that's really just not an option anymore at the size they're...

Re: Zone 5, Urban center Basjoo?

Probably not deep enough.

I thought about covering the mound with the leaves and mulching over, kind of a bio-reactor to keep it warm over the next 6 months...

Zone 5, Urban center Basjoo?

What's your call?

Will it make it through the winter here? (Omaha, NE)

We've got low wind, bit of a heat island from the urban cement, and direct sun all day for as long as it lasts. But last...

Re: Funky Farmers' Market Find

Kubali, you're dead on. She just kept on trucking. Threw out a really long skinny leaf after this bunch, and now back to big full wide ones.

Weird plant though. I don't think I've ever seen a...
