Re: Green AeAe

I believe that the Ae Ae is a variant of the Maoli Maoli. The variegated type puts up both green and variegated types.

Re: SUGAR CANE!! old heirloom varieties

Yeah, looks like giant grass (which it is), but not in a messy sort of way. The tapioca looks cool too with it's umbrella-like leaves.

Re: Anything I can do to protect bananas in a hurricane?

Blew the disc in my back between L4 & L5, and had to become a lightweight for a while. Gave up my main banana growing plot, and now just have a few in the yard - Dwarf Apple, Gros Michel 'Highgate',...

Re: Anything I can do to protect bananas in a hurricane?

Shredded leaves are always better than no leaves unless the midrib is bent / crimped. I had a dwarf red years ago that had leaves like cardboard; other nanners would get shredded in a high wind, but...

Re: SUGAR CANE!! old heirloom varieties

Did you ever get a reply?

Only one I grow is the variegated type, but I've never seen it seed.

Re: AeAe vs Florida, how to tell the difference?

I can usually tell by the variegation. The fruit is an easy way. Ae Ae is rounded at the tips.
From those photos, I'd wager the one on the left possibly is an Ae Ae, but I'd need to see more of the...

Re: Twin Flowers

The most I've seen in a photo was 5, but I read that the record is actually 7.

Re: Hello

If you hang around and grow enough nanners, you will reach a point where you've posted many pics, and can probably do it in your sleep, and wonder why the 'noobs' have problems with posting...

Re: Valor_X & Backyard Banana Joe - Who can fruit a Praying Hands pup first?

I recommend some worm-compost tea for the watering. Supposed to maximize nutrient uptake.

Re: edible vs. non-edible

The presence or absence of seeds may depend on whether or not the male or female part of the flower (or both) are sterile. Also, I think some plants are self-fertile while others are not, and if not,...

Re: Sorry, Blue Java is a letdown

Hell, I'm growing them just to see what the hype is, and I've not had that type before. Most of the types I've grown all had some sort of appeal about them.

Re: Genuine Blue Java Plant/Pup Wanted in the UK

Does the UK have any rules about bringing in plants of that sort? Just curious.

Re: Darn the todes!! Nematode control

If you use Bayer 3-in-1 you need to know that it is a 'systemic' bug killer - this means it goes all through the plant system, including any fruit! If you use this on your plant, and eat the...

Re: How to grow Blue Banana ?

And probably not edible!

Your best option is to obtain a pup (young banana plant) from a reputable seller, or someone on this forum. First, you need to know what restrictions, if any, there are in...

Re: Variegated Florida arrived...And not good news :(

Based on the photo of the corm, it did look like you could possibly salvage it. I'd have used sterile potting mix and kept it lightly damp, but there are no guarantees. Sucks to lose a new nanner.

Re: Growing tips for malanga (taro)

Well, the bottom photo didn't look like taro (we call it Kalo over here), 2nd from the bottom did look right for taro, 3rd from bottom didn't. Plants were similar, but true taro doesn't have a leaf...

Re: Soil drainage question

I never use 'miracle grow' anything, I prefer to mix my own. They sell low quality fertilizer (in my opinion) that is mostly inert (useless) filler, so I never trust any of their products, especially...

Re: HELP...unexpected problem

I'd leave it attached; the fingers in the bunch don't look like they've reached the full size yet. Any way to prop it and attempt to make the p-stem less crimped? This happens to my honohono orchids...

Re: Possible Blue Java

I don't know if it will help, but my blue java pups have the same waxy look on the petioles, that is also on the fruit - that is what gives it the blue/gray/green appearance.

I'll post a pic...

Re: Bananas turning to flower color!?

Doesn't seem like a problem. Eventually they'll ripen and you'll be able to eat them, regardless of the color. Enjoy the color changes.
