Re: Before & after freeze pics Jan 2018. What fared the best?

Excellent work! The Psuedostems appear to be in spectacular condition! Should another hard frost come your way, cover again as you did, and if temperatures sustain at near or below freezing (in the...

Re: Looking for Banana Trees around Pool with pics

If the microclimate in your 7b area receives each winter the now somewhat regular "Polar Vortex," which is the sub freezing spells lasting several days and more, I would respectfully suggest that you...

Re: dwarf / short banana list

Besides the fruiting cultivars, there are a great many flowering bananas that stay relatively short. Not grown for fruit as the fruits are small and the pulp is chocker-block full of seeds. Nice to...

Re: Container banana soil.

Cow manure (as opposed to Steer Manure) is excellent along with compost, peat moss, perlite. Just make sure that the plants have good drainage and don't sit in water.
Best of Luck!

Re: Too late to repot?

I personally would not repot just before the plant is going into the winter season, and the additional shock could be damaging, though NOT fatal.
Keep them on the dry side and clean up all ugly...

Re: Container banana soil.

Hello there!
Eggshells are fantastic for most all plants as they contain the obvious calcium, but also add sulfides and albimum (spelling?). Can't overdue the eggshells, but crush them as fine as...

Re: great flea market find

Erick: Yes, they do fruit, but the season is not long enough to produce large bunches; although they do fruit, very little.

As I mentioned in another thread, digging up shocks the bananas so they...

Re: Trouble after moving indoors

Because of such unforgiving winters and transplant shock and culture and light and water changes, it really is best (unless you have a greenhouse!) to treat your bananas as perennial bulbs and winter...

Checked out your photos --- most amazing! I really dig your variegated varieties, particularly the AeAe and the mottled greens. Love that banana with the purple or dark-colored psuedostem.

Re: Best Bananas to plant?

Seed-bearing bananas generally do not produce large tasty bananas. they produce bananas with seeds in the fruit pulp.
My favorite, which is Manzano, produces a fruit about 6"-8" (inches) in length...

Re: Which of these is better? Leaving the leave or Trimming

To Gambia: As you are located in Northwestern Africa, it should be tropical and probably you are in the rainy season.
Pruning good leaves during the active growing season is never good.
Presently,...

Re: HELP!! Ants colonized my indoor bananas :nanertank:

Ants are not necessarily dangerous to plants on their own, however, where there is an infestation of mealy bugs or aphids, one must realize that these insects are to ants what cows are to humans....

Re: Before & after freeze pics Jan 2018. What fared the best?

Hard to say, but probably the most protected corms---and even that depends greatly on the variety's resistance to cold, and the length and degree of the cold snap and the actual damages caused.
