It will work.

Topsoil /mulch do the same thing as an insulator. for plants and bulbs.
Bagged mulch might be more pleasing to look at.
You should have no issues in zone 7.

There is a very good chance it is a form of Musa basjoo (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Basjoo) which is cold hardy.
Do a Yandex search keyword Siberian banana that should get you a few more answers.

There are some forum threads of members wrapping their stems with older style Christmas lights(no led not enough heat) and insulating for the cold days.
Cost seems low also.

I picked up some double washed cocoa coir today 5kg.....at the hydro store.
Pro stuff and 2.5x the cost of a bale of peat moss
Looks good and smells good.
I cannot wait to use it soon
