Re: Germinating Musa Velutina

I bought 10 seeds and the seller said to expect 50% germination at best.

I let them soak in water for over two weeks (I forgot about them) and 6 have sprouted :-)

I have two Zebrina Rojo, one in ground, another in a pot. Both are doing well.

A month ago I moved the one in a pot near the other in ground one to conceal the boat on the side of my house...

Re: What is this plant?

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

Yeah, Sabarra are like that, it drives me CRAZY :-) I planted my first in 2011 as a 6' tall 7 gallon, and this year was my first decent crop, every year is better than the last.

Knowing I could and...

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

I have two, a tropic sweet in ground since 2/2011, and a tropic beauty which I planted in 2013.

The first is a HUGE disappointment but the tropic beauty has given me 4+ dozen peaches so far this...

Re: broken leaves

Ut oh... I break that rule all the time. Is that like a life or death rule?

When I'm pruning I take off anything going over a neighbor's fence, green or not. I'll also take off green if it's growing...

Re: Time to separate the pups for the Spring

A manual grass edger works too, welding skills not required.

Re: What did you harvest today (other plants)?

It's a MAJOR hassle. I have 10 coffee trees and I planned on having 12, one to satisfy coffee needs for each month but I stopped at 10 because the skinning, drying, roasting and grinding is such a...

Re: Edible Zebrina Rojo

Thank you very much!

Maybe it's the climate down here in North Broward? We have not had really cold weather here, but it's REALLY good to know it may be sensitive. Now that I know this, just to keep...

Re: Edible Zebrina Rojo

OK, nobody has an edible fruiting Rojo... pups are $1000 each :-)

Seriously, if anyone in So Fla wants cuttings, I'll be more than happy to give some away, but I DO NOT, and WILL NOT ship anywhere...

Re: Rooting pineapple

There are differing opinions on this, but when they start to give fruit I let them get as ripe as possible before harvesting because I have a dog that the vermin don't want any part of. If you have...

The only "Cherry" that I found that is remotely close to a northern cherry is Grumichama. Acerola is Waaayyy too tart for me, think chewing a Vitamin C tablet... many of these tablets come from...

Re: Rooting pineapple

Egads, such different results.

I have 30+ plants, six from tissue cultures, the rest from store bought pineapple tops. I rooted them all in water, and planted them when roots were 2-3" and every...

Re: For the new guys

I know some frown on taking plants from friends and acquaintances but when I started I got two small pups from a friend and have a few more since then.

I think even a nursery bought plant is a...

Re: Florida

I'm too used to buying bananas for less than $15 to pay that kind of money to a guy that has too many Mercedes payments to make :-)

I think I can live with plain old green leaves.

Yeah, I read about the seeds.

When I bought them, the hang tag said "Edible zabrina rojo", and all of the pix I saw online look like mine. Solid burgundy color under the leaves, striated burgundy...

Edible Zebrina Rojo

Last year I bought two at of all places, Lowes and some banana lovers said the fruit is not edible, others opined that it is. Well after a MADDENINGLY L-O-N-G wait to sample the fruit, one was kinda...

Re: The Banana Knife-- A Great American Tool

I tried but they're too short to be multi purpose. I found a long heavy blade serrated bread knife works great for all banana chores.

I got mine in a thrift store for a dollar.

Re: What is insecticidal soap?

Last year my neighbor had a row of ficus that were infested with whitefly which took the liberty of spreading to my banana, canistel and papaya trees. I sprayed with neem, horticultural oil and...
