Re: Chronic problems with Sunburn and Rot

I agree with the radiant heat probably being the problem for the one next to the wall. It will just heat up and roast the banana that is next to it.

Re: off topic / on topic - think some might like.

I used to grow one of those in my aquarium. If you get the water conditions right, the stems will grow longer and longer until the leaves reach the surface of the water just like a mini lily pad. ...

Re: Apple or iceceam?

Apple bananas where I live are quite tall in contrast to the small fruit they make. Here you would expect to see a 15 - 20 ft p-stem.

Looks somewhat like a Japanese Maple leaf, but the tooth pattern on the leaf border is different.

Re: Hi. I'm new here and I'm in need of advice. Please help.

Think of a cactus that is capable of growing like a vine. I've had them grow vertically against a tree, and their roots will grow around the tree to anchor it in place.

Are wrap-around roots a habit of this species?

Re: hello banana lovers

It's only too late when you are on the other side of the dirt. You can still grow'em that way too in a manner of speaking.

Re: Hi. I'm new here and I'm in need of advice. Please help.

After any fresh cuts, you need to wait about 10 days for the cut to form a callus. Otherwise it may rot. After the cut forms a dry callus, plant it, but only keep the media lightly damp. Any more...

Re: Red Banana Leaf Plant with Yellow/Brown spots :(

Might be able to tell better if there was a photo. My first guess would be some sort of fungus / dampness issue, but hard to tell, really.

Re: Dwarf Apple and Gros Michel

A source once told me a while back that the Saba, and Apple bananas were somewhat resistant, and Gabe said that the Dwarf Apple was in the AAA 'pome' group, and that they should have some resistance...

Dwarf Apple and Gros Michel

My Dwarf Apple is growing well, but the new leaves don't appear to be increasing in size much from when I planted it. The small leaves below were from before I got it. The top 5 or 6 are all new...

Re: Hello friends!

Hi! :08:

Where are you located? That will determine what may / may not grow there.

Re: Plant arrangement

I've read that the Praying Hands banana was a dwarf form of the Saba. Is this incorrect?

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves

I grew a dwarf Red, Not really an ornamental since the fruit was edible, but had wide leathery leaves. It was the toughest-leaved banana I had ever grown. Lots of red on trunk/pups/fruit.

Re: Question on Maoli

Sounds good! I forgot to mention the color of the fruit, in some they have more beta carotine which can result in a pink/orange color inside, as you've noticed.

Re: Question on Maoli

One possible way to ID a Maoli is that I don't believe it ever has any red streaks in the leaves when young. Also, the fruit should be rounded on the end, not pointed. Also, the petioles tend to...

Re: AeAe or something else?

I believe the Florida variegated banana was due to irradiating the plant to cause the variegation, and the Hawaiian Ae Ae was a natural variegation, but I could be wrong about that.

I've grown the...

Re: AeAe or something else?

That fruit looks right; it is rounded on the end. The variegated one from Florida has fruit that is more pointed on the end.

The Ae Ae is, I believe, a variegated Maoli type banana, and the fruit...

Re: AeAe or something else?

The way the variegation looks is different. Gabe could probably give you a better answer, but in general the pattern of the streaks doesn't look the same.

Re: Introduction and question all in one

Welcome! Ohio is warm enough, but is the season long enough?

For some types it may be better to start them indoors in a pot, and once it warms up, plant them outside.
