The flies aren't the only problem. The larvae eat plant roots. Though, they might not be able to kill your large plants. They can still kill your little plants (TC banana's, etc..). They killed most...

They do that.
If you lift the bulb for winter look for small bulblets which have formed on the main corm.
Some will break away when you lift it and they look like brown marbles.

Those will be new...

They do look like sauromatum venosum and I'd say they're starting to wind down for the season. Once the leaves start going, the stalks will wilt and they will die right back until spring.
