Occasionally, a regular plantain will revert to a french type plantain. I had one on the farm for years, I think I must have lost it in Matthew or Irma, because I haven't seen it in a while.

I've noticed with plantains it is more of a problem with heavy rain saturating the soil in hot conditions. But as was pointed out elsewhere, the cure is to harvest earlier.

For absolutely healthy leaves, I don't know. I may cut a healthy leaf if the leaf is going to rub against the bunch. Perhaps, it is to permit better air flow in the plantation.
