Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

I think it was just because I hadn't built up the soil health before planting it, so that mother wasn't very healthy and I had to harvest a bit early due to it losing all of it's leaves early. It...

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

Right now they are 5-6 inches, last year they were more like 4 inches but that was the first bunch.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

Yeah this winter we got a frost and they lost most of their leaves. Glad they were able to produce as much as they did! Maybe this year will be a good yr with no frost.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

The Goldfinger was huge! 22 inch bloom on BOTH. 6 hands on each. I'm really impressed with the goldfinger, will be planting it more in the yard. It's a bulletproof plant for Florida. It's now pupping...

Re: Most productive banana?

Thanks Gabe! I was going based on wikipedia. Boy did it let me down! Why do you say the tall namwa is more productive? I have noticed my dwarf namwa is not nearly as good as the tall. But I have seen...

Re: Most productive banana?

So tetraploids would be pisang awak and goldfinger. I can confirm goldfinger can produce very well, namwa hasn't produced large bunches but it is prolific.

My "ice cream banana" has pinkish flowers, I assumed it was namwa.

Re: Cockroaches?

Yes the roaches are attracted to the mulch you will be putting around the bananas to keep them healthy. But I've never had roaches in my house and we have a compost pile right near the house.

Re: Banana plants and moles

Moles eat the bugs not the roots, but they make tunnels that could cause the roots to die. I have noticed mole activity around the bananas, probably a hotbed for insects due to the increased...

Pinwheel Chiquita is yummy

I just had a really good banana labelled chiquita from Publix. It tasted a little sub acid like the ones we grow in our backyard. Probably the best bunch I've ever gotten. We get the chiquita brand a...

I'm sure you are close! This is about 15 months from TC. I already removed a huge pup off it and put it in the other corner of the yard.

Re: I pulled out my Manzano.

Yeah I love the taste of them! So I was hoping it would have done better. My soil is grey sand and I added quite a bit of organic matter but it just always looked like it was chlorotic and struggled...

Re: Feeding compost and manure to young plants

I just keep layering it all on top. Bananas have many feeder roots you wouldn't want to chop up. When it rains it all drips down into the roots anyway.

I have some that were stunted by the full sun, one is a manzano that just won't get bigger! I moved it to east side of the house. See how it does, once they get a bigger corm the sun doesn't seem to...
