Re: How do you prevent bananas from doing this?

Typically I let the mat grow outwards and eventually I replant a pup in the center and start the cycle over again.

Re: Anyone growing FHIA-03 Sweetheart?

Bunches can be very large.
Propping is advised. Even with large diameter trunk, as you can see from the pix above, it is still quite flexible.

Re: Timing/managing mats

You could influence it some by choosing the "right" suckers, but without every-day-the -same weather like Panama, it is much harder to do. Ideally you would want flowering in the spring, but that...

Re: Do mysores tip?

Skinny trunks, and definitely needed propping when fruit was hanging.

Re: Am I killing my first bananas?

Just keep them damp. No more. They won't show much growth at this time of year: it's winter. Fertilizer is not needed till they are actively growing. Pray for spring.

Re: Banana flowers without leaves

Leave the bunch where it is. The pup may or may not provide energy to the parent. Nothing to lose by leaving the bunch. The parent will not add energy to the pup at this point apart from already...

Re: Banana flowers without leaves

Without leaves there is no photosynthetic contribution to the mat.

Re: What will happen if I don't cut my bananas down for the winter?

Don't have those issues here in paradise. However, as long as there isn't any mushy rot, I don't see why they can't be left as is. The dark brown mushy stuff is not you friend and will spread through...

Re: Banana pseudostem broke and full bunch fell to the ground.

The whole point of propping to to support the weight of the bananas, not to stiffen the pseudostem. Almost as if the bananas would stay where they are on the prop even if you cut down the pseudostem....

Re: Banana pseudostem broke and full bunch fell to the ground.

Don't touch it, don't move it, don't do anything. If there is still physical connection in flower stem, it will continue to mature and eventually ripen. Moving it will risk further damage to the...

Re: Transplanted Goldfinger to Pot: Is this bad?

Yes, was hottest week of the summer. Be patient. It is what it is at this point and overthinkjng and continued tinkering will only worsen the situation. Bananas are pretty resilient.

Re: Transplanted Goldfinger to Pot: Is this bad?

Probably has transplant shock, and the hot weather the last week didn't help. Keep it moist and let it be. Be patient.

Re: Strange spacing on new fruit

Agree D Braz bunch looks normal and the retention of the brachts is typical of D Braz. If you grow one of the FHIAS you will notice they are quite different and most drop their brachts almost as fast...

Re: Strange spacing on new fruit

Looks like plant was weak when it flowered, and fruit is more or less correctly spaced, but actual fruit is undersize which gives the appearance of overly wife spacing. Not uncommon on a first bunch...

Re: Flowers falling off

If you mean all flowers, no that is not normal. If you mean male flowers following several hands of bananas, that is normal.

Re: no leaves on pseudo stem with fruit??

Some varieties "think" they are done when the flower emerges, while others have leaves and male flowers for months after the fruit ripens. You have the advantage of warm weather, so let them be and...

Re: NPK ratio- Why nobody agrees on this?

Any fertilizer where the 3 numbers are the same are the same proportions. 8-8-8 is half the quantity of nutrients as 16-16-16, so you have to apply twice as much. There is a magic formula, which I...

Re: Views on cutting leaves off a banana plant...

If it ain't yellow or brown, it stays. You start skipping meals and see how you perform.
