Re: Spring is here finally

I think part of why I love growing bananas is because I'm so impatient. They grow fast and a new leave is always popping up!

Re: Spring is here finally

That's too bad!

I couldn't find any basjoo at the nursery where I've bought them before. I ended up getting a red banana, which isn't cold hardy at all to my knowledge. But it was only $39 for one...

Re: Spring is here finally

Very nice! I'll be starting with a new basjoo... probably planting in a week. I have one small one that was indoors all winter, so that one will go back out too.

We're in the 80s most of this week,...

Re: Spring?

It's supposed to be 80 here in Denver today, but April (and early May) can be cruel! Crazy temp fluctuations this time of year. I don't consider planing bananas until May 15, and even then I double...

Re: Before & after freeze pics Jan 2018. What fared the best?

That's a serious arctic front! Funny thing is, I just checked national temps and it shows 49 in Palm Bay. But 64 here in Denver. Not that 64 in January is all that uncommon here, but still about 18...

Re: Before & after freeze pics Jan 2018. What fared the best?

Wow! You're pretty far south for such a freeze, no? Isn't your area able to grow Coconut palms?

This is a brutal winter for sure in the SE. Well, everywhere east of the West. Here in Denver, we've...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

The corms survived (as well as the elephant ear bulbs) and everything grew back. But the bananas are only up to around 3' at this point. Elephant ears are growing well, but not huge like they should...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

When I lived in SoCal, I had no problems getting bananas. They grew like weeds! But where I lived, it never bot below 40 degrees in winter (coastal area). Probably rarely below 45.

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Nice! Is there a specific reason for planting in the boxes?

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Well, everything grew back. The Elephant Ears and Bananas, but the Bananas are only 2 - 3 feet tall (as opposed to probably 8 - 10' by now if they hadn't been killed back by something). On the...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Thank you! Well, I have a big garden center not too far away that sells Basjoos every spring that are already maybe 5' tall for $50. I'll just start over next spring. I might check this weekend and...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

No, nobody was digging in the area at all. I live on a small, corner lot wit a sidewalk, so all my landscaping is easily accessible. It's very obvious that only the tropical plants were targeted....

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Well, I'm already done for the year. The one from last year was up to probably 6' tall, and I bought a new one ($50) that was probably 7'tall. Then all my elphant ears, I started the bulbs back in...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

I'm putting mine back in the ground after work today. We actually had a very light frost yesterday morning! Today is sunny and 80, but then 3 days of 60s and rain coming up. Spring/Winter just...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

Yeah, water them. They'll grow new leaves soon.

I'll put mine back out tomorrow. I had snow at my house, but it never stuck or got below 32 degrees. They said that was the latest snow we've had in...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

My Basjoo stayed green/alive in the ground well into November the past couple years.

Right now, it looks crazy outside. Huge flakes of snow coming down! But it's 35 degrees. I guess it's the...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

OK. I have a nursery in Denver that sells Basjoos every year of decent height, so never bought online.

Everything is out of the ground now and in the garage. I hauled in potted plants too, and will...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

Mine is about the same size as your larger one in the picture. I know this happened a few years ago and since I have just planted it, it'll come back out easily. That's what I did before... just...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

I checked it last evening and can see/feel an entire new stem growing up the center... probably over 2' of new growth growing with the old P-stem. So it's working:woohoonaner:

Interesting how fast...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

Nothing to see yet lol! Last year I tried to overwinter the p-stem, which didn't work. But it did come back from the ground. I didn't get much growth though. I see others around the country where...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived

I'm in Denver and probably have about the same climate as you. I have a stem I dug up last fall and am waiting for it to return from dormancy (indoors) to plant the first week of May (assuming...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

Just keeping it moist. It was solid when I pulled it out of hibernation, but seems to be "peeling off" now, and nothing remotely green coming out of the top.

I tried overwintering outside last year...

Re: Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

I think this thing is dead. A week of watering and nothing.
