Re: Wasps, helpful, a nuisance and a danger...

Speaking of 'itching', I get rid of it by rubbing on the paste of the outside of a cake
of soap, which had been wet for some time. It works within 20 minutes. Important
is, that it is...

Smile Re: Wasps, helpful, a nuisance and a danger...

Reading all these stories, I feel lucky with the wasps we have here. I have no idea,
what species it is, but they nest in small colonies under eves, in garden sheds or
anywhere they can find with...

• Helpful with pollination, although nowhere as efficient as bees or bumblebees,
because they do not sport a ‘fur’ to which the pollen easily...

Re: Separating my first pup...

Not being able to see it directly, I still believe it would be best to cut the stem off
completely withe a sharp non-serrated knife and let the corm develop a new one.
The more smooth the cut, the...

Re: Separating my first pup...

You do not need any roots. As long as you have a sound piece of corm larger than a
walnut, you have the makings of a banana plant. It will only take a bit longer to develop.

Re: Help Rookie Mistake

Chop that corm up into six pieces, plant them and you will probably end up six banana
plants, same as with potatoes. :)

Re: Is setting fenceposts in concrete necessary in sandy soil?

Hi Kat,

wooden posts should never be placed directly into concrete, but you should use a post
bracket as intermediary like the ones shown here:

Not really, not until after the November elections. Too much to do and post there.

Re: I am tuned out of "bananas"...

Yes Mark, these shelters have performed very well other years, but this year I have
not opened them yet.

I had some problems last fall, because the stumps kept on growing after I had already...

important for the US but for the planet as a whole.

See you all in November!

Re: My two dwarves look bad

There is an extensive discussion about root rot starting here: http://www.bananas.org/f10/what-root-rot-19716-6.html

The gist of it is, that the only way bananas can suffer root rot is when...

Re: My two dwarves look bad

I second Sieg's advice, but my first thought was: Were these pots in direct sunlight?

If so, we have a clear case of unintentional 'bananaslaughter'. Banana roots in the
ground are never exposed...

Re: Pups in Container Plants

No, they are not "needed", but that does not keep them from coming anyway.
What you keep depends on what you want them for.

In New York, without a greenhouse, you will probably want them for show,...

Re: Mother Plant Asleep?

It would, once they are above ground. Also the lack of vigor by the mother plant
in low light conditions will probably affect the pups as well.

Re: Mother Plant Asleep?

Another thing: I do not think, that misting has any impact at all. I live in a region,
which is much more arid than New York. In winter while heating the already humidity
depleted cold air it...

Re: Mother Plant Asleep?

Not knowing the details, I would guess that this is due to low light conditions.

Pushing out a leaf a month is about all the production I get during January and
February and my plants sit right...

Thanks, Kat, I had never heard of newspaper pots, but I will be sure to use them,
when I do my seeding/planting next spring.

Re: When do I transplant my seedlings?

Well that was fast!
I do not think the seedlings care very much, when you transplant them.
You should be governed by the conditions in the seedlings tray. As long as they do
not crowd each other...

Good for you,Kat. The situation where I live, is very similar. Our yard waste is
picked up every two weeks with no limits on the amount.

I have a compost pile consisting of two sections. One...
