I have been growing, happily, a namwah type banana for some years. Not many fruits, but the plant survives outside and most years keeps the pstem, and that's all I ask her.
The problem is: the plant...

Glyphosate and bananas

Around my banana it does grow a very invasive alien specie of weed, and since it has an extensive underground part, and weeding isn't really an option, i was thinking about using glyphosate in the...

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

Hey maesy,
you may be right. On the other hand i need them in case the bigger stem goes in flower without any significant number of leaves.
Some time ago, however, i did read something about the...

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

One more update. No pics this time.
Banana appear to be growing on all the stems.
Bigger stems are the slowest recovering from damage, while smaller ones appear already healthy.
The stems with the...

Second update.

Dwarf Namwah is quicker to recover than i thought, showing on the most advanced stem already 2 leaves, and putting out the third. By comparison, the...

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

Honestly? I don't have the slightest idea.
The D. Orinoco should be a tiny bit hardier than the d. namwah. Still, it managed to die, despite being in pretty much the same place. My best guess is,...

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

I see what you mean. Acute and extended damage are definitively two different things. I think that the key point is to have at least some daily temperature above 32F. I think that ice started forming...

Re: Dwarf Namwah cold hardiness

Hi hydroid, I think it's a great banana too. Not to mention how well it handles the lack of water/dry stress.

@siege2050: yep thats right. Incredible right? Never hoped to have it respond so well...

Experimenting is the only way to know for sure. I suggest you to try and report you results, better if you can do it in this topic.

Not to discourage you, however i have had fairly good results with...

Yes! I did! :) But the plant was a bit on the small side (wasn't even 3 feet and the summer has been cold), so it flowered too late, but now its fruit are ripening in my living room!...

Re: My indoor 'nana collection surviving winter.

Your SDC is awesome!
I gave up with that one because it doesn't like my winters, and apparently is pretty hard to get it to fruit. But yours is a beauty for sure!

Re: Banana spending winter indoors? Warm or cool

I have kept for two years a Dwarf Cavendish and a Veinte Cohol in my room (17-20C), in front of an often closed west facing window. I live at 44N so my sun isn't yours, for sure. They stay this way...

Re: Winter is killing my Dwarf Cavendish, please help!

Now I see pictures. The plant seems fine to me. You just did separate a pup which was too small, and in the process you did stress the plant a bit. Ideally you want to separate pups that already have...
